Boss CEB-3 problem?

I got a CEB 3 new a few months ago and it was working great. I stopped using it for a little while and now the thing isn't working. I changed the battery out for a new one (tried a few actually) and still doesn't work. I dont have the AC adapter for it.

What happens is when i plug in an instrument the red light lights up very dim, then i plug it into the amp as i usually would, and when i hit the pedal down to activate nothing happens, the light stays dim. Ive tried multiple basses, chords, etc. Still nothing.

I feel like I've had this problem before, am i doing something wrong or does it sound defective.
