boss cs-3 anyone?

Sign in to disble this ad
i stumbled across these last week, and they seem to get fairly decent reviews. id like to get a compressor. not one that squashes your tone down to nothing, just something i can use to chop off the spikes a little bit, maybe get rid of some of the spiking and clipping that occurs with my bass synth wah (setting one, range/sens cranked left, control cranked right, tone knob on my bass cranked, play hard and see what i mean). anybody ever tried one of these, or could reccomend any other decent (but cheap and subtle) compressors?

Read bongo's reviews on compressors.

For the Boss CS, try the Humphrey Modded one.

I've tried both the modded and unmodded versions and I agree with bongo's assessment. The stock CS-3 was pretty useless to me.

But the modded version was great. Stopped huge spikes, was good for transitions from fingerstyle to slap and was fairly low noise. It can get a high level of squash, but I didn't like the character of the squash at those extreme settings.

If I wasn't using so much sub-bass type sounds these days I'd seriously consider picking one up.

I haven't tried a CS3, but I picked up a CS2 and its not too bad. I don't know enough about compression, but I needed something to tighten up the lows. I know this sounds funny coming from a bass player, but my basement's unfinished, so when I hit any note below an A, the ductwork rattles like crazy!!! I had two choices; insulate and finish the basement, or compress some of the lows out. I'm happy, the wife isn't.

I had a CMATmods.com mod done to my CS-3 and I wish I would have just paid a few bucks more and bought the EBS compressor.

I do like the stock CS-3, I use it for evening my pick attack, maybe for something more complicated you'll need to check other stuff

I use the stock one...it changes your tone a lot, at least on the setting I use, but it doesn't suck too much low end...I only noticed some very small sucking on the low E, F, F# and G...my amplifier doesn't play these notes as loud as the other ones anyway, so no big deal and I am talking about a very small difference...now, if you use 5 strings it will be worthless I guess.

I originally got my CS-3 to help with live sound. Our sound guys at church are not really "trained" engineers by any means. I play a mid-scooped eq and they would shave off volume on my channel when I would hit something on my E string. It has definitely helped with balancing the levels but I do get a bit of a squashed sound. Only used it two weeks now, so still have more to learn.
