Question Boss DD-5

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm posting this thread to help me get my head around the Boss DD-5 pedal i just acquired. Seems like a versatile pedal and I'm wondering what functions/settings people are using? In general, what bassists are using delays for??

I also just acquired a Boss DD-5. I too am wondering what settings bassists here are using? I'm looking for a Pink Floyd (The Wall)/The Cure sounding delay.

The hold function can be relatively useful for making noise. Unfortunately it won't oscillate, so if you're looking to make noise you'd be better off with an analog delay.

If you're looking for a traditional delay sound I would get the FS-5U. (or other tap tempo) With digital delays, if you're the slightest bit off tempo it becomes painfully obvious... especially on bass. If you're not careful you'll get a wall of crap very quickly.

The dotted notes and triplets are a cool touch. I never used the reverse setting in a band, but it sounds pretty cool.

The only time I find delay to be useful is if you're playing incredibly ambient music.... postrock/shoegaze type stuff. I could never really find a use for it in traditional rock/punk type bands, but hey, if you're playing rock, and can use it that's awesome.

Those digital delays are pretty full featured, and probably way overboard for anything I'd do with bass guitar. A simple analog delay would be my preference- unless you want to have several "preset" delay types, or need tap tempo, etc.
