boss delay pedals

i'm looking to get a delay pedal.originally i was looking at the digitech hardwire DL-8,but i'm suposed to get the pedal as a gift from my parents for christmas and we think money is going to be very tight this year,so i decided the DL-8 was out of the question.


so now i'm looking into something cheaper,and somewhere i saw that the prices on the boss DD-3 have been dropped a bit.i can't get the DD-7 obviously,but what are the main differences between the two?? is there something really important i'm missing out on with the DD-7? and are there anything different between them soundwise(or tonewise)???

EHX now has two delays under $100 if you're looking for an analog delay.

Generally speaking, these are both going to sound the same. They differ more in features.

DD-3
12.5ms minimum delay time
800ms maximum delay time,
hold function only for as long as you hold the pedal down.
No tap tempo.
Mono in and out only.

DD-7
- 1ms minimum delay time
- 6.4 second (6400ms) maximum delay time in mono, 3.2 in stereo.
- 40 second record time in hold mode in mono, 20 in stereo, repeats til you stop it.
- Automatically recognizes and configures itself for stereo -> stereo, or mono -> wet/dry operation.
- "Analog" delay modeled after the DM-2.
- Modulated delay mode.
- Reverse delay mode.
- Expression pedal or external tap tempo control mode. (IMHO the main reason to get this pedal over the DL-8)
- Built-in tap tempo control

I own the DD-7, but it's for guitar use. I like analog delay for my bass, personally. The DD-3 isn't bad, but you might want to look around for a used DD-7, as I remember seeing a few around for less than $120, and tell the 'rents to get you something else.

the mutt-ok,so the DD-3 is basically just simpler feature wise,i take it.either way i'll probably settle for it at the moment,unless i can find a used 7.i don't mind,sound is all i'm lookin for,i'll probably be better off starting off simple.

p.s-i'm definatly settling on a delay for christmas haha.
i'll even throw in my own $$ on it.then i'll settle for clothes every year for christmas till i die.

I was in a similar situation last year, and ended up going with the DD-7. It's got the digital delay, obviously, which sounds great. It also has analog, modulating, and reverse delays, with an added hold function to boot. This is a pretty great collection of delay possibilities packed into one little compact pedal.

The ability to use an external tap-tempo switch is so clutch, too. I can't tell you how easy it is to just hook one up, then tap in your tempo without any need to go the route of holding the pedal down for 2 seconds whenever you need to change tempos. A boss FS-5U will only set you back around 20 bucks, I believe.

Definitely do yourself a favor and do a little bargain-hunting for a DD-7, used OR new. The upgrade is absolutely worth it.

dd-3 or dd-20. Don't go half way.

I'd only consider a DD-7 going halfway if you've got the room on the board to fit a DD-20.

I could pretty much guarantee you that if you had the DD-3 you'd be happy, but the moment your friend showed you his DD-7, you'd regret it.

I found a DD-7 on ebay for 110. The extra features and ease of use are well worth it. There is a lot going on in this pedal! The fun times this pedal has brought was well worth the money.

Its really not that big. Two boss pedals side by side and you save alot more space than having 2 boss pedals because the jacks are top mounted. In fact by the time you put 2 right angle leads into a standard boss it takes up 2/3 as much space as a dd-20.

Plus the poster sounds like he's not running a board or many effects atm.

Nah, I just meant in my case. The geetar board is full with a volume pedal, wah pedal, fuzz, two od's, a phaser, and an adrenalinn III. The DD-7 plus a tap-tempo is all that would fit.
