Boss GT-10B Initial Thoughts and Opinions

Yes, as you all should know from my most recent posting of my pedalboard, I have gone with a multi-effect. I guess you could say it is the 2nd or 3rd time I've gone with one, but this time is a little different since i've got all my dirt in the fx loop of this one.

Basically, Im using it as an addition to my setup, not as a replacement.

And that changes things a lot

I guess 1st off I should say that its gonna be a while before I get around to doing any samples off of this thing. Its mostly because its got a lot of different FX, but also because the editing for most of them is incredibly deep.

2nd. Costwise I think this has been a really good deal just because of the FX I would have gotten in lieu of it. I was looking for a delay where I could control the number of repeats with an exp pedal, a flanger/phaser/whatevermakesametallicswooshingsound, and a manual/envelope wah/filter.

For the delay, only the Empress Superdelay seemed to be the delay that would suit my wants of exp control and ease of setting. The SD also costs something like 500$, over 2/3rds of the 700$ tag on the GT-10B which I bought new. As for the flange/phase/whatever, after some time with the GT-10B I've really come to like the sound of a flanger after some thick fuzz. I've also come to like tap tempo for both delay and modulation. The advantage of the GT-10B in this case is quite big, since there is a master BPM variable that can be set manually or by a footswitch assign, and can be used by any effect. Also, after some experimenting with my other gear, I realized that I do prefer manual wahs, for whatever reasons, but also that I like the sound of fuzz->wah mixed with the original fuzz sound. Something that is also more simple to do with the GT, as is making the wah "switchless" in operation, if I want. I have also assigned the delay on/off to the exp pedal controlling the repeats. Something that Im 99.9% sure is not available in any stock delay, boutique or not.

So, for 700 beans I have a synced tap tempo delay (with exp control) and modulation effects and a blendable switchless pedal wah. Just the Superdelay and a 105q would run me about that, never mind adding in a flanger

But, and heres the kicker, I have found some extra little gems in this unit. One is the low cut of the EQ module. I was considering getting an octave up fuzz pedal, and still might, but I can get a pretty good "faux guitar" sound by placing this after my outboard fuzzes. It also allows me to actually use my lunchbox "bass" channel, and have it "appear" in the mix, since all my fuzzes keep the low end, or even increase it. Right now its a little redundant since I can just turn off the EQ to make the bass "reappear", but once I get the 2 volume pedals going I'll swell in either channel independently, something I can't really do simply with the GT, at least as far as I've thought it thru.

The 2nd gem is the OD/DS section, and its blendableness. Im still using the outboard fuzzes (especially the Supercollider and Attack Goat) for the basic fuzzed out sound, but both the "muff fuzz" and "bass fuzz" sounds are kindof cool when blended with the first fuzz sound after killing the lows with the EQ. Its like adding a 2nd guitar (or 3rd channel) to the sound. Blends are awesome, and I think im getting addicted to blending stuff. Wahs, FX chains..... I just love blending

The 3rd, and so far, final gem that I have discovered is the manual mode. The assigns could be included in this, but since I know about them from the manual I don't consider that feature to be quite as gem like as the manual mode. I guess I consider manual mode to be a gem since its super easy to program and gives you 6 more switches to play with, over and above the 2 "control" ones. I was considering getting a MIDI control board sometime in the future, but I don't really think I need one. I've got the EQ, OD/DS, FX2 (modulation), Chorus (a separate module!), Reverb (love it!) and Tuner (for muting ATM) assigned to these extra swithes. Add that to the Wah and Delay exp assigns, a delay type switcher assign (reverse type <-> regular mono delay), and the master tap switch and I got more control than I really need LOL.

Anyways. Long post and I gotta go. Obviously if you guys have any questions, just ask I would also be happy to take requests for sound clips. My profile should be up to date as to what I have in my setup (still don't have my Subdecay Noisebox tho), so I can totally include those as well.

Great review, man. Both of my guitarists had the GT-10 and for whatever reason ditched them in favor of stomp boxes. It sounds like this multi-fx isn't the end-all-be-all for someone with acquired tastes in effects, but it also sounds like a great addition to a basic pedal board in terms of adding a little extra kick to what you have on your board already. I don't think I'd want to replace an entire board with one of these because if you do, that's kinda it and you're stuck with what's there. For 700 bucks though it looks like a good deal depending on the specifics of what you're after.

I have one too (and a GT-10 & GT-3) and i think it is the best thing out there for Bass MFX boxes. Had mine for over a year now, no troubles with it, it's built like a tank.
It's going to take you a long time to realize all the features of the GT-10B, there is so much hidden in little corners of this thing.

To make your tweaking a little bit more pleasurable, i have a patch editor for the GT-10B, so most of the GT-10B settings are on your computer screen, and you can tweak the GT-10B from there.
Check the link in my signature below for the GT-10BFxFloorBoard patch editor.

Have a crack at making your own Wah sound with the custom Wah settings, and get to know how to use the Assigns.
You can get a pedal to do 9 things at the same time with the 8 Assigns and pedal function settings.

It's not a Tech 21 XXL B, but you already have one of those, so I can't give you crap about it.

Hehe, I have actually delved into the assigns and such. Not quite making one pedal do 9 things, but I have come up with a cool "switchless" simulation for the wah based on the volumeoff=tuner thing they mention in the manual

I might check out the editor later, but I actually don't mind going around on the GT itself. Pretty big screen
