Boss GT6B as a MIDI controller for a drum machine?

I hope this is the right place to ask. It's kinda off-topic, but I've looked around on the web for a place to post my questions and I come back to you guys.

Here's the issue:

I want to get a drum machine for live performance with my dad's southern gospel/bluegrass gig. I'm currently playing bass for him and he can't get a dependable drummer that wants to play his style.

I figure a MIDI foot controller may provide a few more options than the standard 2 footpedals that you can use with the Alesis SR16/18 or Akai XR20.

I will likely pickup on of these drum machines, but thought maybe I use my GT6B to control it since it has some MIDI capabilities.

I have no intentions of using the GT6B for bass during one of these gigs, only for the drums if it will work.

Will it work?

If this is the wrong place to ask or you can even point me to a website where MIDI junkies can help, I'd appreciate any info you can provide.

thanks in advance
