Boss LMB-3 question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have just started using pedals. I recently picked up a Electronix Messdrive here, and it seems its only setting is screaming loud.
I know the LMB is generally used to calm spikes in slap style, I was wondering how it would be if I used it to regulate louder effects.
Thanks for any info

presently I have an LMB-3 at the end of my chain because I mix and run parallel distortions. This set up makes sure that when one loop is not running there isn't a dramatic volume change. I have not encountered any problems doing this even when distorted/loud signals are coming from each channel. The LMB-3 is known to make popping sounds when it does lots of limiting, however, I have never encountered that.

If you end up experimenting with it let me know what you find out.

If you just need to turn down the output level of an effect, you don't even need a limiter--anything with an output volume knob will do. An EQ for example.

With the boss lmp-3 I have the ratio set above noon for a limiting effect, but the threshold sets the volume it's triggered at. Between the volume and the threshold you have your control. I like it's limiting attack envelope cause it's punchy. I don't use Enhance at all! (Only Boss pedal I use. I usually use an Alesus micro limiter that was just as cheep, used, e-bay, maybe better fidelity)

I had this messdrive before and it gets loud FAST. But you can keep it a unity by barely turning up the volume knob.

I mainly use the lmb-3 to control pedals and signal chain for pedals without volume control... I'm looking at you Q- tron

If the LMB3 does start popping or crackling you can get another one (or the Behringer clone) to put in line with it and take your peaks down in series.

That way one pedal isn't hit so hard, but the outcome is the same.

If you need to control transients and such, a compressor will certainly be the key, but if it's just volume, save your money and get a looper or EQ, like bongomania suggested. Definitely check out his links in his sig...they are invaluable. I ultimately went the route of getting a maxon CP-9+ and couldn't be happier. If you're going to get a compressor pedal, get it right the first time. I wouldn't settle on the boss.

That is quite possibly the worst advice I've heard in the last few months. If one comp is inadequate to the purpose, a second one in series will just make things much worse! Any noise and artifacts will be further amplified. Not to mention it would be two pedals on your board taking up space, where one good one would do. Talk about throwing good money after bad!

Incidentally, I am not dissing the LMB-3, it's generally fine. But "fixing" one by adding a second is just stupid.
