Boss ME-50B into power amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
Would I be able to run directly into a power amplifier using the output of my Boss ME-50B, or do I need a preamp? I'm thinking of switching over to a rack system. I understand that a preamp would probably be better sound/tone, but I'm trying to piece something together with the hopes of adding a nice preamp later. Thanks

Yes, you'll need a preamp. The ME-50B is not designed to boost your signal at all. In fact, If I remember right, it doesn't even have a global volume. If you really cranked the volume on the compressor or something like that, you might be able to get some output out of a power amp, but only if it had pretty high input sensitivity.

I was afraid of that. Thanks for your help.

No problem.

One option that might work if you're looking to drive a power amp is to get one of those cheap ART Tube MPs. They run about $30, and they actually sound really good. Those will boost your signal up to the proper level. I would recommend doing a tube swap for JJ Teslas, though. It makes a big difference. Even with the new tube, you're still looking at about $50 for a solid preamp.
