I'm actually thinking of putting my MetalZone back to use.
Just for a mild distortion, a little bit of grind.

I used to use it for a really fat distortion, and I always liked it.
Although for really hard distortion I would also consider a ProCo Rat.

I have one and I really don't think it lives up to the hype.

It's very non-organic sounding and heavily scooped.

The only use I've found for it is to cascade my Bass Drive into it to increase the boominess and get a low gain type fuzz.

YMMV.

That's what I like about it.
I think it's just a matter of taste and what you want in a sound.
I also like the Ibanez Phat Hed in overdrive mode because it is non-organic sounding. (Also in distortion mode, but I don' like it in that mode.)

For this reason I don't like the SansAmp Bass driver. And although I haven't tried the VT, I think I wouldn't like it considering the reviews. (But I should give it a try when I have the chance.)
Just a matter of different tastes.
Good thing we have so much to choose from, to shape an immense variety of tones.

Between now and my previous post in this thread I put my MetalZone back in action. I found a setting which I can use now. Just a little bit of grit.
In the old days I used this for full on distortion, that's what I don't want anymore.

You are right about it being a little hype.
Before joining TalkBass I didn't know so many bassists also liked to use the MetalZone.

Preface: I had my old Metal Zone that was sitting around for years unused modded by Humphrey Audio. It's not stock.

That said, I set volume at unity, bass to 3 o'clock, mid selector to the lowest Hz and adjust mids and highs to the room.

Gain is almost nothing. It become heavily unmusical after 3 o'clock.

Its a suprisingly good pedal for bass, but there are better choices out there, well different, thats why I still have mine.

In the guitar world, it gets a bad rap from a lot of the younger people. It was the same way for me in high school - I never owned one, but it was widely considered to be a mark of inferiority to own one; as if you weren't good enough, or deserving enough to own a tube amp. And it had to be a Marshall. Now, I much prefer the Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier to the JCM-2000 DSL100, and I happen to like the sound of the Boss Metal Zone. It was really trebly, but if you ran it with a Boss OC-3, it sounded amazing. That having been said, I have never used it on bass.

Fingerstyle:

Level: Unity
High: Noon
Low: 4:00
Mid Freq: 12:00
Middle: 10:00
Distortion: 10:00

With a pick:

Lower High to 11:00
Lower Distortion to 9:00

Keep in mind this pedal doesn't do subtle.

I landed it! Won't get to try it out until next week, but $40 is a deal nonetheless.

There's a hype around the Metal-Zone on bass ? This is a bit surprising.
It's a very good pedal but does little more than making your bass sound like a heavily distorted guitar.
Perfect to play power chords and fill in as a rhythm guitar a la Lemmy, for anything else it lacks subtelty.

The new Hardwire Metal Distortion is really nice. Great technology, and not as mid scooped as the Boss. Tons of distortion in there also.
