Boss NS-2 Effective In Line Level FX Loop?

Sign in to disble this ad
I feel like this could be an interesting addition to a rack if the pedal can handle balanced TRS @ line level in a preamp's effects loop. I really need a suppressor in my rack but I would like to have a gate as well. Any suggestions?

It can handle that kind of input level, but your issue is that the gate would almost never actually close because the signal is so much hotter than what it's designed for. What I would recommend if you're having issues with too much noise is to rig the NS-2 up like this:

Bass -> NS-2 input
NS-2 Loop Out -> Whatever effects you have on your board
Effects pedal output -> Amp input
Amp effects loop -> whatever you have in your effects loop
Effects output -> NS-2 loop return
NS-2 output -> Effects loop return on amp

Does that make sense? Just disregard the effects pedal step if you're going rack-only.

That's how I'm always pleading with my guitarist to hook up his NS-2 so it will cut out his Marshall JCM2000's preamp hiss.

Also, I don't believe that it will work right with a TRS cable. I've never tried it personally, but most stompboxes won't. Are you sure that your effects loop is TRS? Even if it is, it should still send the output signal through a normal TS 1/4" guitar cable.

I doubt it will deal with line level, and it definitely won't deal with balanced signals. I'd be very surprised to find a balanced, line level fx loop on a bass amp though.

Perhaps you could explain what you want to achieve? You say you want a suppressor and a gate, which seems kind of odd to me.

I've only tried a boss ns-2 with a guitar amp's effect loop and its horrible. it sucks the tone pretty bad... stick with using it like a normal stomp box and put it between your head and bass
