Boss OC-3 or EBS Octabass to get a clean low B on a 4-string P-bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Subject says just that. I've been watching YouTube clips 'til my ears bleed.

A Boss OC-3 is around $120 and an EBS Octabass runs around $150. All I want it for is for the occasional low B to Eb that my 4-string P-bass can't get. Not really looking for crazy effects with it.

The OC3 seems like if I hate it I can at least get a chunk of my $ back and it looks like it does more.

The EBS really impressed me in one video and then let me down in another.

Boss OC-3, Poly mode, guitar input, first knob at noon, second at 1 o'clock, third knob maxed.

I own both the OC-3 and the EBS.

Either way, buy used and you can get all of what you paid back if you don't like it.

If you just want a solid octaver without breaking the bank, get a Digitech BSW.

Mode 7, Sens wherever, Control at max, Range at min. It tracks down to B without a problem.

CyberSnyder: I went with the OC-3 due to your other posts on the forums. Thanks for posting some useful reviews!

Jimbob: Hey I think I have the Digitech somewhere. I'll have to give it a go.

I forget who mentioned using the Guitar input originally, I can't claim that, but it has definitely worked for me. I still like the OC-2's tones for somethings and the M9's Bass Octave is insanely good.

if you're wanting an octave pedal just for this purpose you may aswell get a 5 string for a clean low B, it'll sound better as opposed to using an octave pedal

I bought an OC-3 brand new for $79 from Amazon. Worth every penny.

+1 using an octaver, ANY octaver, to achieve super low notes, is much better achieved using an extended range bass. The octaver is an "effect" pedal, and what you're looking to do won't work. It's been tried before, trust me.

Does this pedal only go down in Octave. I'm looking for something that would go up

There are a few ways to hit the note, but if you use an analogue octaver it will sound fake, and if you use a digital harmoniser it will sound weak. If I wanted the sound of a five string bass I would probably just buy a five string bass.

OC-3 with Guitar Input in Poly mode definitely tracks fantastic and sounds great IMHO. The 'tunable' effect with the Poly knob is great to tune the effect's sound to what you prefer.

I have a MXR Bass Octave Deluxe on it's way to me also and am curious how it stands up to the OC-3 as far as tracking and sound. Will be interesting.

The MXR has some different sounds, but the OC-3 kills it on tracking.

What are the benefits of using the guitar input over the bass input? I haven't even tried that!

The benefit is it tracks about 3x's better using the guitar input. Seriously. More accurate, lower notes, etc.

If the OC-3 tracks better than the MXR BoD, then the BoD will likely be for sale regardless of differences in sound. We'll see.

I had my OC-3 modded to include an input switch by putnamguitars.com. Then I can pick the input on the fly without ripping up the pedal and readjusting.
