It's seriously not a hard pedal to use. Fiddle with it until it sounds good to YOU. Also, if you need the manual for any reason, you can find it on the Roland and Boss websites.
You could even try using the "Guitar" input instead of the bass input. You might like the results better than when using the "Bass" input. Don't worry about low end loss - with the OC-3, that shouldn't be an issue.
For starters, try setting the "mix" (balance of dry signal and octave) to 50/50 (I believe on the OC-3, that'd mean setting the knobs to 12:00). Perhaps dial the +2 octave to zero (IMO, it's overkill). Start with the "Classic" mode (akin to the OC-2) before messing with the other modes.
