Boss Pedals - Unexpected tone/level sucking

The other day I was recording some hip hop stuff going in direct, aside from my Boss tuner and Bass EQ (powered by the tuner). We noticed a little noise at some point and I took them out of my chain since I was tuned and didn't need the EQ.

Surprising- audible boost! At least 2-3db, and clarity I wasn't hearing before. I had both pedals off on my earlier takes and it bent my mind a little. I've recorded albums with this chain.

Are these pedals tone suckers? I had no idea.

The only other thought is that I used a slightly crappy 3' patch cable.

Hi there, which pedals(TU-2, 3, CEB-3)? In the studio and live I haven't had problems. There are reports some do suck tone, which I believe, especially older units.

Eq's can be somewhat decieving. They are gain and attenuation devices, depending on the frequency setting. Cables could be, but with something a short as 3', I wouldn't expect signal loss that way.

I'll try to help if I can

My TU-2 definitely alters the tone of my signal.
It is an older model. I think I bought it in 2002 or 2003.
(I usually keep it out of my chain altogether by simply tuning up before playing)
I'm interested to know if the newer model TU-3's have this problem or not.

Thats interesting. My TU-2 is about 2007, and I hear no signal loss. They may have changed the buffered bypass at some point in that time.

In my high volume rig, I don't use Boss anymore...ever since I took them out (by chance) and suddenly there was clarity and more volume! At home, low volume, I use an LS-2. EH bypass can be suspect too. Only EH I'm using now is the Germanium in an Xotic blend. For mass produced pedals I still use MXR/Dunlop and Tech 21, Ashdown on occasion. Haven't tried the new Digitechs.
