is it a good idea, i have an ls-2 to take care of low end loss by blending signals, and all i really want is to add a little grit.

Yeah, I actually used an SD-1 for a bit. It's a decent overdrive, a little more grindy/less farty than a tubescreamer, but still definitely overdrive. If you're just looking for "hair", then I'd keep the gain and tone knobs both below noon.
