Boss SYB-5 vs EHX Qballs Enigma

Sign in to disble this ad
Right now I am using a Boss SYB-5 with an expression pedal, however the Qballs Enigma has been catching my ear and I was even more overjoyed to hear it is expression pedal compatible. One of the main reasons I like the SYB is the sustain that I can get out of it. Would the Qballs be a good replacement for the SYB or would it be wise to keep both?

Do what you want to with the SYB-5 but get yourself an Enigma you will not regret it!!!

Scrap the SYB-5 and get the Enigma. For me, those Boss Synths have been nothing but trouble

Sounds like a plan. I believe I will be getting rid of the SYB, it doesn't track to well anyways. The Enigma looks so sweet. Thanks guys.

It really depends what you're looking for. If you're looking for an envelope filter, then go with the enigma. If you want a synth, then the enigma is NOT gonna do it. Their skill sets are extremely different, and they do not do similar things at ALL.

They're quite different beasts...

The SYB-5 is totally digital and tracks your playing and creates a synthesised note.

The Enigma is an analogue envelope filter with optional fuzz pre-filter.

Keep the SYB-5 until you get a chance to play the Enigma because it's not necessarily a matter of one being better than the other.

Pretty much this. Completely different animals... The Enigma can get KIND OF "synthy" but its no replacement...

It has been my experience that envelope filters are similar to 'anti-sustain.' They add emphasis to a note (and straight up sound awesome IMO), but they don't do it very long unless your instrument already has good sustain and you have the sensitivity set just right.

Enigma is awesome, but will not do quite what the Boss does.
