Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner: needs calibration?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a sneaking suspicion that there's something up with my TU-2 tuner. I need to check it against a few other things, but every note that's "in tune" lately has registered as -20 on the tuner.

So I'm on the hunt to get that checked out for sure, but in the meantime... has anyone ever calibrated their TU-2? Have you had to "fix" it so that it knows what's in tune and out of tune again?

Another option (one I'm not thrilled about) is buying another tuner. But before you give me all of your recommendations (I have about 4 in mind I'd be looking at), I'd really like to see if I can fix this one. Ideas, comments, links would be very helpful.

Here's a link to the TU-2 manual:

http://lib.roland.co.jp/manual/en/dl...27/TU-2_e7.pdf

It is possible to set the tuner to something other than 440, and it's also possible to put the tuner in a mode where it remembers that setting. You may have inadvertently done that. Pages 20-21 of the manual will tell you how to set it to 440.

Thanks. Already been through that, though, and it is indeed set to A440.

-20 cents from A440 works out to about A435. It's registering AWFULLY flat, but sounds fine.

Worth a bump...

...and one final bump. I'm guessing that tinkering with the inside of a tuner isn't too popular around here.

The TU-2 is all digital, I wouldn't mess with the internals.

Did you change your strings recently?

I very much doubt there's any internal adjustments. Tried a fresh battery? What are you comparing the 'in-tune' notes with?

Yep, fresh strings.

Tuned to the tuner in my teaching room, which always puts us in tune with the songs my students bring in. Then tuned to the TU-2, and it says 20 cents flat.

Is it possible the other tuner (in the teaching room) is off? What is the other tuner?

Is warranty repair an option?

Heck, with a 20 cent error they might even fix it out of warranty.

Nope - it's the tuner in a Fender B-DEC, and it agrees with another tuner, which agrees with the piano at the club I play with. Only dissenting opinion is the TU-2. I've heard if they get knocked around they get waaaaay off, too.

Tuner was bought 2nd hand, so no warranty.

I'm convinced - it's not possible. On the new tuner hunt, I guess...

For the record, I hate the TU-2! I own one, but it's definitely on my "need to trade" list. I haven't seen one lose calibration, but I have seen them break down in every other possible way - so I guess it's possible!

It amazes me how popular these things are. With professionals as well!

Is there a pedal tuner that will list the octave # too, like "A0" or "D1"?

My dad has something similar. I was thinking of something like the TU, but with that extra piece of info...

Im just thinking about the next time I restring, prolly on a new bass. The TU-2 only goes down to A0 (iirc) and thats what my low string is. Kindof a pain since I blew right past last time I restrung (after the bridge move).

EDIT: Wow, most tuners don't go below that

EDIT again: The specs on boss's site say the TU-2 goes to C0 (16.35Hz) Actually, what it is, is I have it set up to say "5", "4" etc, and its set to double flat. Basically ADGCF. I blew past it cus it says "really flat string 5" for like evar, then BOOM your past it, and I have it in my head for whatever reason that that "5" is below what I want.

Just ignore me till I get my head straight. *grabs sledge hammer*
