Boss Tuner Pedal--is there a better one?

Sign in to disble this ad
lately, during shows.. this pedal.. the Boss TU-2 pedal.. whatever it's called.. its the white pedal.. I got it used.. it is generally good..

however, a few times.. I have noticed.. it misleads me.. it sort.. of locks up.. and does not @ all work.. it appears it's going nuts.. meaning.. not in any mode at all.. it will tell me "G" is attained when I am in D.. etc.. then I have to click the MODE button and select back to guitar.. fresh battery.. the pedal has lost its mind.. and it's caused a lot of problems live.. lately..

I am thinking of grabbing a Korg.. which is ugly and cheap looking.. I like that the Boss pedal is heavy duty.. anyway.. just wondering how the pedal has lost its mind.. and what you guys recommend? I need it for muting also.. I split my signal through it.. str from bass to pedal... str from pedal to Mark Bass LM II.. if the Markbass had a MUTE button... I would put the pedal off its tuner output.. but I like the MUTINg..

suggestions appreciated. !

Korg Pitchblack. It is cheaper than the BOSS but is not a cheaply built pedal. It is more accurate than the BOSS (accurate to one cent not three like the BOSS) and it is true bypass.

The Sonic Research Turbo Tuner is probably the superior pedal tuner:

Ugly and cheap-looking? Certainly not! The Korg is infinity more durable than the Boss. More accurate too.

lol... ok.. the korg.. I thought it was plastic.. I had never seen one except for web.. I will look at the others also..

"true bypass..." well Boss has that too.. I never use it..

what do you guys mean by that.. that you connect a SECOND cable to the bypass.. "just in case?" .. or always..

should I be running a 2nd cable.. but to where.. I just connect to the output of my boss.. but the pedal has really been causing me problems.. serious problems.. the other night, I ditched it and tuned by ear.. changed the battery a few weeks ago.. brand new.. tested the battery.. it's maybe 90% full.. or charged.. so it's not the battery. thanks one and all.

True bypass means that, when it's off, it doesn't effect your sound at all (as if it isn't even there). I can't say if the Korg Pitchblack is better than the Boss (I've never used the Boss), but I can tell you it's a heavyweight metal tuner that works great, is very accurate and is very easy to read.

I use the Peterson Strobostomp... Sure it is more expensive, but is more accurate than the Korg, and is a great DI...

I use the Peterson Strobo also in both the stomp box and iPhone version,
as well as a Planet Waves and Ibanez LU20

... Never used the Pitchblack but my guitar player didn't like his?

I have the Planet Waves tuner pictured above. It is very reliable, built like a tank, looks great with other pedals, and it's true analog bypass.

I use the Boss TU-2 and it's never been a bad experience for me.

Once in a while I will notice my TU-2 flash up the wrong note for a second or nothing comes up for a second but all in all it works fine for me.

Tuners are frequency counters, they're not perfect and may pick up some noise here and there.

I got a little grief for posting this last time, so let me make it clear that I'm not trying to be ignorant or snotty; but read this on the subject.

I like how states at the end that he doesn't use a true bypass tuner himself.
