BOSS VF-1 sound clips and patches

Sign in to disble this ad
I created a page to host my sound clips and patches for the BOSS VF-1. I know some users have these, and others want to know what they sound like.

I'll try to get some modulation sounds up on the page as they are very excellent on this unit, with lots of parameters, like most BOSS gear.

Let me know what you think.

I'm not trying to say the VF-1 is the best synth effect ever. It's absolutely not, particularly for bass since it can only track guitar registers which means on a standard 4 string you're forced to playing 12th fret and above. But consider this thing came out in the 1990's and today we're in 2011. Listen to the tracking and lack of significant latency on this ad-hoc, unrehearsed track. I just setup a decent sounding synth patch on the VF-1, ran it into my GT-10B, added some mild verb on the GT-10B, and here you go. This is the raw synth sound, plus verb from the GT-10B. But no other effects used on the VF-1, but I could've run the synth into EQ, comp, an amp sim, yadda yadda.

In particular take note of the octave jumps and how they generally track pretty well which typically confuses a lot of monophonic synth effects, and also note the speed of the tracking at the end of the track.

Then I listen to the horrible, embarrassing synth in my BOSS GT-10B and wonder what the #$% happened. Seriously. The even older BOSS SE-70 even had a sub-octave blend feature and portamento that is missing from the VF-1.

You can hear other sound samples on my page in my signature.

I still keep a VF-1 in an unused rack even though I have an Axe-FX Ultra, just in case. It does lots of effects really well, including some rare ones.

Great clips Gastric. The VF-1 sounds REALLY good and I hear they're not super expensive on the used market these days either.

LOVED those synth sounds

Thanks for the compliments.

There's basically no organized audio samples and really no videos (I can't make any, sorry). This is literally the 4th one of these boxes I've owned, I think I've finally learned to just keep it.

I purchased it this time purely for the bitcrusher as there's not a lot of those around in general, and certainly not programmable ones with all of the features the VF-1 provides EQ up front/sample reduction/bit crush with a LP/BP/HP resonant filter, a clean blend, then a noise suppressor after. That's a lot of bit crushing options!

Even owning 4 of these, one thing I never actually tried in earnest was the synth effect. I think back when I owned my last boxes I tried it briefly, it tracked like doo doo, and I never tried it again. I know a ton more about synth effects and how to play to them and to program them for decent sounds now, so I'm way ahead of the game than I was before. Unfortunately it still doesn't track super duper great, but there's not a lot of boxes that do. But it tracks pretty good as long as you play within the constraints which for me seems to be 7th fret A string and above. Even then a couple of the notes like 12th fret A seem to track really poorly for whatever reason. And my flatwound Darkstar bass tracks better than my round wound P-bass.

But there seems to be some, maybe a bunch, of potentially usable synth options assuming you like 80's sounding synth using square/saw waveforms. But there's plenty of VCA/VCF options, plus you can run the synth into all of the other normal effects if you want.

I've just spent a couple more hours banging out bass synth patches and am fairly impressed. I'll try to get more patches up on the page. And we'll see what the band thinks tomorrow.

I've owned a few and still use one as my main FX unit - I've found that the synth FX work best by playing up the octave and dropping the octave of the FX sound - I use a very nice "Taurus Pedals" Bass patch and a "Tom Sawyer" sweep patch.... the other FX in the unit are great, and I have many more patches to build and use when I get the chance - the Phaser gives a very convincing MXR P-90, the Flanger is nice, and the defretter is decent - just have a problem level-matching that one.....

Added a bunch more sound clips including some drum loops through the bitcrusher. Good stuff.
