Brad Wilk's overdrive/wah

You know that tone he uses for his overdrive... (check out "Tire Me" for a clear example)... how does he get it?

What would a good overdrive be to get that could closely mimic his signature sound?

FYI: I use a Fender P with DiMarzio dp127 pickups through a peavey tnt 115

RAGE Bassist

Slow down there mate!

Tim Commerford is the bassist in Rage Against The Machine, not Brad Wilk, he's the drumer!

In answer to your question, firstly the wah he chooses to use is the Dunlop 105Q - the white Bass Wah currently in production, and in some rigs he was even seen to use two together at the same time, held together with a piece of wood, a really massively accentuated wah sound.

His overdrive is another matter. It was custom made himself using the circuit from an old wah pedal no less (i think i'm right??!!?!). It's just a full on stomp box without any controls. Also his beefy sound can be tracked down to his self-wired jazz pickups.

However, some would justify that a CompTortion unit gets pretty close to this revelled sound. Personally, i have crafted such a sound on my KorgAX3000B multi pedal.

Hope that helped, Rich

Tim does use a custom made distortion pedal, but a lot of his gain and overdrive comes from his amp setup. He uses 3 Ampeg SVT-2PRO amps.

The first runs into an Ampeg 810E and is his always-on, clean tone.
The next 2 each run into Ampeg 410's and have progressively more gain.
He switches these 2 on and off for depending on how much drive he wants.
