Any thoughts about how to get something that smooth and fuzzy?

Knowing Robert Been, it's a Roger Mayer Voodoo-Bass and Akai Headrush combination. There is definitely delay on this song.

well i saw them in columbus a month back and he had his Tube Zipper, Tubescreamer and some black pedal with four knobs on it. The knobs were lined up along the top of the pedal. It was all blacked out and had, IIRC, a blue led.

Not sure, but I loves me some BRMC. I've got some pics of his pedalboard around here somewhere. I'll see if I can dig 'em up when I get back into town (visiting family for the weekend)

Whenever I listen to this song I imagine a Godzilla-sized elephant rampaging through some metropolitan area. Awesome.

Robert Been and Carlos D from Interpol got me back into playing bass.

I've seen pics of his board, and i've seen he uses some custom looking pedal.

I want to know how to get that fuzz more so then what one it is. I am good with distortion and overdrive. I just can't find a fuzz i like yet and thought this was a good start.

Yea... I'm a big BRMC fan too! I remember when they used to be a local SF band.

Nice track, forgot about this band. Seems like a fairly easy tone to approximate, my recipe would be a muff based fuzz with the tone rolled down a little bit on both the fuzz and your bass, and play close to the bridge, with some slides and a short timed delay.

I think the delay is all that has me thrown off. I have an EHX Hot Tubes and i get real close with it. The last time i had a delay i was too stupid to use it right.

Check the Pedalboards of the stars. He uses Vintage EX - OD, Akai Headrush and the Mayer Voodoo Bass. I've been using a sovtek muff and it gets you pretty close.

By chance I just received a response from David Archer of Vintage FX about Roberts pedals. The black box with four knobs is a VFX ColorDrive.

"Hey David,

Robert uses the same pedals when playing both bass & guitar. He was using the ColorDrive pedal during the Baby81 tour for his bass fuzz & Peter Hayes was using the VFX-OD as a replacement for the tubescreamer. During the recording of BTDT Rob began using both the ColorDrive & the VFX-OD in place of his TS as well. Rob now tours with both, but I think primarily is using the ColorDrive for his bass “Fuzz” sounds.

I hope this helps.
Dave Archer
