Broken 105q bass wah

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a bass wah off ebay, which the seller "assumed" was in working condition, but it turns out it isn't. I'm still working out stuff with the original seller to see if i can get i refund, but I was wondering if anyone had an idea how i could just go about fixing it.

The wah just makes a faint distorted sound that fades away. If i play really hard on my bass i can faintly hear notes, but, like i said, it fades away with crackly distortion. I've tried changing batteries, and using a 9v adapter, but nothing helps. Any ideas?

just got one off of eBay myself... (paid $26 total )

How much did you pay?

Well, if it has this problem even when not engaged, then you can probably say its in either the input/output jacks, or in the part of the circuit that isn't the actual effect...

What kind of tools do you have? Multimeter? Soldering iron? those would be usefull...

it sounds like something is wrong with the circuit personally...

This thread just popped up a few days ago, I actually thought it was the same thread

sounds like the same problem, but they never really came to a conclusion

yeah, doesn't seem to me like that came to any conclusion either. anyway, i do have a soldering iron and multimeter. I have to ask, though, how could it be the jacks if there is at least some output noise when i play?

What would be my first step?

well, first off, I'm no pro at this, niftydog knows much more than me and helps me out with tons of stuff, seanS has helped me a lot too

yeah, thats a good point with the jacks though, but I think if they are loose you can have problems like this. I'd say open the pedal up and start looking for something that isn't right, loose connections and whatnot

Solder joints can go high resistance, which can manifest a fault that is somewhere between barely working and shazzbotted.

Take your soldering iron and some solder, open up the thing and just go right over the whole circuit board heating up each joint in turn and adding a tiny bit of new solder - not too much. Make sure you can see the wire of each component sticking up through the solder. If any of the joints look like an igloo (dome shaped) then they can be bad joints. Also, all the joints should look shiny and silver - not dull or crazed. Don't spend too long on each joint, and be careful not to let too much heat build up as you go.

Other suggestions: clean the jack connections and pot with some specific electrical contact cleaner. DON'T use WD40 or anything like that - the best stuff is Caig Deoxit.

If none of this works, then it's time to break out the multimeter and a schematic.

I had a problem with a unit from ebay. It was practicall brand new but the ribbon had broke from the board to the pot. I had to send it back to Dunlod. $50 later I have a brand new bass wah and I'm still ahead on cost.

Thanks Ebay!
