Brown Dog envelope out function?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok I just bought a Brown Dog. I've heard the clips on the website with the envelope out hooked up with the 00 Agent Funk filter. They sound pretty killer!!!! My problem is I just bought the RoboTalk2.

Has anybody tried using a different filter with the envelope out function? If so did it work, did it damage anything or is there any thing I should be aware of before trying this? If anyone has tried this before please let me know what you've found out. Thanks

id presume you`d need to hook it up to a filter that has CV capabilities.........??????

I don't know have the electronics background to really explain how it works and the Chunk website/manuals are a bit vague in defining things. But here's what I believe is going on.

The envelope out on the Brown Dog seems to be a clean out and the envelope in on the 00Funk seems to be an input trigger. Basically it makes it so that it is still your clean dynamics that trigger the envelope rather than the fuzzed out signal.

One quirk about it is that when connected this way you can't use the Brown Dog alone but only in conjunction with the filter.

It sounds great with the 00Funk but I'm not sure you can use it with another filter. Maybe something like the WMD or Pigtronix that has a Key/Trigger input but I can't even say that for sure.

The other issue here is that the Robotalk 2 doesn't really do the synthy fuzz/filter combo sound. To my ears it just sounds like a stuck wah and gives a "wailing" tone rather than a synthy one. Good for a Cliff Burton solo sound, but not necessarily for funky tones.

Ok I must admit I have seen the term(CV) many times but haven't yet wrapped my brain around it. Anyone able to explain and determine whether or not my Xotic RoboTalk2 might work(I haven't gotten the Brown Dog in my possession so I haven't been able to try it myself.... I am also reluctant to try due to my limited knowledge) Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Jared you are right the manuals for both are a bit vague.

My intended purpose is to have my BOD and the Brown Dog drive the filter and have a nasty octave, filter and fuzz combo so not being able to use the Brown Dog any other way wouldn't be a problem(at least initially).

An interesting thought is that I do have the Pigtronix EP-2 and yes it does have a trigger input. So maybe I need to experiment with that, the BOD and the Brown Dog.

I do love the sound of the RoboTalk and have noticed that with my Multiwave Distortion from Source Audio that it doesn't really do the synthy sound(thought the Brown Dog might do the trick) so using the EP-2 might be my best option at this point.

Thanks for the insight Jared. You always seem to be able to put things in perspective for me and I appreciate it!!!!

I have alot of experimenting to do and I can't wait!!!!

You're welcome.

I can't say for sure, but I do believe the Robotalk 2 is a band pass filter which is why it reacts the way it does with fuzz. The DOD FX25 did the same thing, as did the Maxon AF-9 and Mutron III when in BP mode. When pegged with a hot signal they just open up all the way and sound more like a dirt into wah sound than a synth sound. I've found Low pass filters (like the 00Funk, Groove Regulator) are best for synthy tones.

That said, the BD/00Funk combo with the envelope connection is extra wet and expressive sounding, but I've used the Brown Dog with lots of other filters, just connecting them in a normal daisy chain and had good results.

Because the Chunk has a clean blend it does give you a bit more control over the filter than when using other fuzzes.

The Brown Dog has arrived!!! I have it hooked up to my Pigtronix EP-2 using the trigger input and the envelope out of the BD. This is what I wanted, I love how it sounds with my BOD ->BD->EP-2. What a fat, dripping, synthy sounding tone. Oddly enough my MicroPog seems to have zero effect on this combo....Wierd? Thats ok though I mainly use it(micropog) with my robotalk2 and my Multiwave Distortion for a totally different but just as cool effect. I am totally loving my setup right now!!!!!

I have nothing to add, and I'm glad you're happy with the sounds you're getting. I've been chasing similar sounds...
