budget gated fuzz

Sign in to disble this ad
i know the Chunk Brown Dog is discussed as the holy grail of gated fuzz, but it is a bit out of my budget. from the clips i have heard, i am not a fan of the Subdecay Flying Tomato. i checked the Deviever site, and i can't make sense of what some of the pedals do. any suggestions on an under $150 gated fuzz? Deviever pedal or anything else that fits the bill?

I think the devi ever cherry pop and the legend of fuzz get a lot of love around here for gated fuzzes on a budget, more so the former of the two. The legend of fuzz is more bitcrusher-y than gated. Go with the cherry pop.....

you can make your own Woolly Mammoth for around 50 or 60 bucks and I think with those 150 you can get someone to make it for ya

The Arger Capricorn is supposed to be a clone of the Woolly Mammoth. I think they are about 100 Euros, which is probably somewhere around $150 (I'm not sure what the exchange rate is like). I haven't tried it, but I was intending to buy one at some point.

Used, they don't make them any more. They come up fairly regularly on ebay though.

I just picked up a Zoom Ultra Fuzz off ebay. Unfortunately the RESO knob is totally non-functional so it literally is ONLY a gated fuzz for me. So I can't say how the RESO would add to the sound. But the straight gated fuzz isn't nearly as tight or synthy or overall as awesome sounding as the Brown Dog. And they sell for $100 used or more these days which is approaching the cost of current gated fuzz products.

One problem with the gate on the Zoom is that the more you turn the Gate up, the less overall volume output you have. So the Gate starves the entire output to the point where you can have the Level knob maxed, turn the Gate up pretty far, and have virtually no overall volume output. Thus the Gate feature is somewhat limited in it's scope due to the overall volume drop.

Well no not exactly, it's gating the signal more and more as you increase the gate, increasing the volume allows you to exceed the threshold of the gate so it doesn't kill your signal, I always found the gate very usable, I don't think it was intended to be cranked and you still have signal come out of your pedals. But as you say yours is faulty it might not be working like the 3 I had.

If you want something a bit odd the Sinister Audio Soul Provider has an awesome gate, but it's not a normal fuzz.

I recently snagged the Swollen Pickle. I think it does a pretty good job.

The MI Audio GI Fuzz can give you some gated sounds or some super harsh nasty fuzz sounds. It's definitely a great fuzz but the Brown Dog will do the gated thing on a completely different level.

If you can build the kit (or know someone who will build it for you) you can get the OLC Chunky Cheese for $90.

Buying one assembled for $170 is still cheaper than a new Brown Dog, but not but not cheap.

Here's a clip of it doing its gated thing:

The MXR Blue Box can be used as one... just turn the blend up all the way (which blends out the octave-down effect)

i did not think that the Swollen Pickle and Wooly Mammoth (and its clones)... also, i didn't get a sense from the Deviever Legend of Fuzz was gated, nor did i see the Cherry Pop. i fully realize i may be wrong, so please correct me.

that said, i realize i may be missing other names for "gated" (ie; is touch sensitive another way of saying gated?)

the MI Audio GI Fuzz and the Zoom look cool, i'll have to find some examples to hear how they sound w/ bass. thanks for all the posts so far!

I've never actually played any Devi Ever fuzzes so I can't comment there, but the Swollen Pickle is NOT gated and the Mammoth certainly is.

No. Gated means a noise gate that cuts off the sound between notes.

that's what i thought. 50% on the swollen pickle/Mammoth.
building my own mammoth sounds like a fun project... i could add a blend knob too then.
