Build my pedalboard!
Hey guys just looking for some input on effects.
I play pop rock/pop punk and am not looking for a lot of effects.
Basically I am just looking for overdrive, chorus and compression to go along with my tuner and hopefully fit them all on a nano board.
I'm looking for sturdy pedals but not looking to pay boutique prices.
Thanks in advance!
Don't tell me what to do! It's my hot body and I'll do what I want!
The Zoom MS-60B is a great pedal for this purpose, will cover a lot in terms of delay, verb, chorus, flanger, even envelope filter and you may even like the dirt. The light OD from the BB preamp model is working for me, at least for live use. Others seem to like the compressor models, those I am personally not finding to be that awesome.
But perhaps some dedicated OD in front, a Pork Loin, B3K (although that is boutique), or a Sparkle Drive (not a fave but I use it).
The MXR compressor seems to be really useful and well-liked, or the 3Leaf Pwnzor, but it is also boutique.
Depending on your setup (active/passive) the Pork Loin is pretty good for a bass OD. It never handled active basses that well to me. It handled my passives just fine and sounded pretty darn good! It has a blend feature to allow you to control the amount of distorted signal going to your dry signal. I really liked that feature and it's right at $90-ish dollars used.
As for a board. Gator has two sizes of the bone, nice construction, a bag and a mutlipedal power source for cheap
Can't go wrong with a Small Clone chorus pedal. Overdrive you could use an Ibanez bass tube screamer. I personally use a bass Big Muff but I like raunchy distortion. MXR bass compressors are good too
That's exactly what my board is minus the compressor. If I had to pick a compressor it would be the MXR though.
I run bass --> Korg Pitchblack --> Big Bass Muff --> Boss Bass Chorus --> amp
First question: what's your budget?
For overdrive/distortion, I'm a fan of the Pork Loin (generally less than $100 used), but I'm also a big fan of the Joyo Ultimate Drive ($30-40). There are other flavors, but these are my two mainstays.
As for Chorus: Small Clone, Boss Bass Chorus, Ibanez Tone-lok Chorus (surprisingly decent) - and all are generally available used at affordable prices.
Compression is another animal altogether: since I run an overdriven sound 90+% of the time, I've never felt the need to hook one up, so....
What's your budget?
OD: Pork Loin, B3K, Catalinbread SFT, Dr. Scientist The Elements, Fuzzrocious Dark Driving or The Demon
Chorus: MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe, Hardwire CR-7, Boss CEB-3
Hey guys thanks for all the info.
I'm looking to spend under $500 and preferably closer to $300.
After some discussion with bandmates I am thinking of going with: Little Big Muff, TC Corona Chorus, BBE Sonic Maximizer.
Then I am going to try and mount it and have it fit into my portaflex 210 for storage!
Also, I'd be wary of anything BBE puts out after what they did to the optocomp. Go to that ovnilab link I posted and take advantage of the recommendations made there.
I was wary of the little Big Muff but was trusting my guitarist. I hada Blogger and really didn't like it. I am really considering the Pork Loin now even though my last Danelectro pedal crapped out on me after a few months, granted it was a Fat Cat series.
The MXR chorus looks great, I am a fan of their general pedal lay out.
Anyhow, for your application, keeping between 300 and 500, I would go with this selection:
Pigtronix Bass Fat Drive
TC Corona Chorus
MXR M87 Bass Compressor
All these could be found used on here, for likely much less. But if I were buying new with your budget, this is what i'd get. If you buy those pedals from that store, you can use the 16% off coupon as well, to bring the whole thing under 400.
