Build a nation - Bad brains

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone just wanted to introduce myself first. My name is Christian I've been playing bass off and on for about 2 years. Now that I'm really focusing on the bass I am now finding out that this is the instrument I really love.

From the title this is a question about the bad brains build a nation album. If anyone has listened to this they would hear the phenomenal sound that daryl omits during this cd. I just want to know what effect he used to do this? Is it possible without the fancy studio equipment they probably had him use?

Its a raw sound but not necessarily new, in some older punk albums you can almost here the same sound unintentionally, it just feels as though the bass amp is about to explode. i have a practice amp i can spare, if I can achieve this through it (not exactly the same sound of course) I'd be a happy bassist

thank you for your time

PS: a million daryl jenifer points if someone has the tabs to "jah people make the world go round" song :P

If he omitted a sound, I'd guess, a mute pedal?

Welcome to Talk Bass Necos.

DC Hardcore... just sounds like home. Don't worry, you don't need to blow up your amp, that tone is pretty easy to get: play near the bridge with a pick into an overdriven SVT Head, out to an 8x10.

Otherwise, just pick up an overdrive, preferably something with an onboard EQ, and maybe tubes. I think the EHX English Muff'n may be perfect for getting that sound, but be sure to try out a whole bunch of ODs and distortions to make sure you really like what you're getting.

There really isn't a way to get that bright a tone without a pick, but digging in really hard fingerstyle might get you close.

I'm really suprised anyone else on talkbass plays D.C. hardcore, but I am very happy about it, I play near the bridge on my P-Bass hard with a brass pick, and use an Ampeg BA-115 for an amp with a Boss ODB-3 used for a really small amount of grit, but I'm getting a tube amp and 610 this summer when I can get the money

thanks for the replies guys I truly appreciate it.

I'm glad to see there are some people here who appreciate this kind of bass playing. Daryl from bad brains just leaves me in awe, it's like he's playing a beast more then an instrument during the build a nation album.

I'm trying to shape around his sound/some jazz and speed for my bass playing.
