Building my first pedal board today

Sign in to disble this ad
Gonna go to the hardware store after work and pick up some things.
I'm sort of planning this all out in my head, and it's only going to be rough, nothing fancy.

So far all I can think that I need is a piece of plywood and some zip ties. I have spray paint and a drill at home.

I'm aiming to fit it in a standard tool/mic case, you know the kind I mean:
(but without the foam).

I'm thinking a long piece of plywood, cut off one end to make it square. Then cut that piece at at an angle to make triangle legs to give it a slope.

Drill holes next to each pedal and run zip ties over the pedal and underneath to secure (I don't really trust velcro, and I can't be bothered with all that gluing anyway). I'd like to have holes behind each pedal to run the power wires down underneath as well, then attach the end of the daisy chain to one side of the board.
If I get ambitious, and there's room, I might add a breakout box with 1/4" in and out plus power.

Am I missing anything here? I have short patch cables and all the pedals at home.

I'll try and post some pics as I go along.

There's some industrial strength velcro you can get at walmart for about $15 that will hold a 3 pound pedal with about 2 square inches. I tested it out by holding part of my pedal board upside down and shaking it.

That will all work OK, but I strongly encourage you to rethink velcro. If you get the industrial strength stuff it is plenty strong enough and there are ways to get around the sticky velcro on the bottom of the pedal.

I tried zipping my effects once. If you are going to do ANY mixing, matching, and rearranging of pedals zipties are going to be maddening.

Good luck.

Hmmm... yeah, I don't really plan on doing a lot of rearranging, but you never know.

I'll think about velco, maybe if I see some at the store. I just don't like the idea of plastering the board with velcro, and trying to have it painted, them having to glue velcro squares to the bottoms of all my pedals, unscrew feet from the bottom. Plus I'd still have to drill through the velcro for the power slots.

All the pedal boards I've tried with velcro have just ended up having the pedals fall off and slide to the bottom of the case after bouncing around in the van for hour after hour, kinda defeats the purpose.

But I will keep it in mind!

I tried this with a similar case once, I ran out of space because of the way the inputs/ outputs and patches were configured. It seemed like I would have plenty of space for my pedals, power and cables, but I failed miserably. I work with plastics and may make a custom one down the line.

is having the volume pedal before the tuner the most practical setup?

I think I have the Tuner and Delay backwords.

it should be pre and post delay mutes (volume before, for swells, and tuner after, for instant mute).
