Building my own effects

Sign in to disble this ad
I know the theoretical basics regarding diodes, transistors, OP AMPs, FETs and pretty much all the stuff required to build an effects circuit. I want to start testing out some stuff using a breadboard. Unfortunately, I am a total n00b at practical stuff, e.g. I don't even know how to get the sound signal from my bass or guitar into an electrical/electronic circuit to be processed . Care to tell me of any site that will help me out with the absolute basics on the practical aspect?
I've already checked out a bunch of sites but most are filled with info on the theory and nothing on the rock bottom basics of te practical aspect.
Thanks!

That site seems nice, but the question I asked in my post is the major one for me. How to get my sound signal into (and out of) a circuit? And any further site recommendations will be gratefully appreciated too. Thanks rratajski!

Do you mean how to add an input jack and output jack?

it seems hard to believe that you have a working knowledge of circuits but not the capacity to get the signal into and out of the circuit. It's a simple as wiring jacks at the input and output of the circuit and there's plenty of info on BeavisAudio about doing that. Dano even manufactures a product that makes that part of the breadboarding a breeze (the Beavis Board)

I use a stripped down amp chassis that I have an input/output/power/switch hardwired into, and then I work the breadboard into that equation.

Are you asking "How does one wire up the input/output jacks?"?

*man I type slow...

Yes it's visible (and nearly tangible) all the way here in Clifton.

Well I am Computer Science Engineering and here in India this stuff is all over our high school/college level books. What I meant by knowing the circuits and stuff is that I know, for example, what OP AMPs are and how they work. Not necessarily how it would influence the sound signal but how it would influence an electrical input signal, in general. I said theoretical basics and not working knowledge (practical vs theory conflict).
And, I think where I have made a big mistake here is that I would like to stress that I plan to use only a breadboard to test my circuits (setting my ckt on it and using it as stripped down fx unit. Don't know if it actually can be done. Looking at the schematics for bona fide pedals such as, say, the Boss CE-5 I saw nothing that couldn't be done on a (large enough) breadboard.). I couldn't just plug in an audio signal into a breadboard, if you know what I mean. Again I couldn't take an electrical output from the breadboard and put it into an amp.
Again, as I'm from India I can't expect to have anything for DIY help shipped in here. I'll just have to make do with the simplest stuff.
Bottom line (question). Guitar-->Breadboard-->amplification. How?

I have got it!!!
TBer rratajski = EPIC win!

Infact stuff like http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages...aticToReality/ makes any of my theory knowledge useless.
Can some Mod please close this thread?
