Building a RAT?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TB,

So, since my last posting and after some research I've decide that a RAT is the tone i've been seeking!

However, i've had very little luck in finding either a vintage version or the Turbo version (which i am told works well with bass).

I'm thinking that i might order one of the kits:

-The BYOC Mighty Mouse... which seems like it's a RAT plus a whole lot extra.

-The GGG Rat... which seems pretty basic.

Has anyone had any experience with either of these builds? Any others out there? Is there something ELSE that gives a good RAT-like distortion?

Thanks 'yall!

You might want to try the Rodent Kit from http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/
I helped my friend build their Ross Distortion kit and it was pretty nice.

edit: I didn't realize that ggg refered to the same thing. oops.

Haha, no worries man. Yeah, i like GGG. Thier RAT kit is like, half as expensive as the BYOC one too...

I was also looking into building a rat but I wasn't sure how well they would work with bass (retain the low end). The one from BYOC looks a little better to me (more options) but might be more difficult to build.

btw. If you post on the BYOC forum maybe someone can help you with some mods to make it more bass friendly (changing a cap or two is usually enough).

Both versions (BYOC/GGG) are easy to build. The BYOC offers more options for sure. The GGG is the easier of the two builds.
You can do easy mods for this to help w/ bass response (see www.beavisaudio.com in the FKR section).
It sounds just like a vintage RAT!

That's EXACTLY the kind of input i was lookin for! Thanks so much!

I was stoaked on the BYOC one, but it DOES seem a little over-kill just to get that "rat tone".

Also, in regards to the BYOC boards... i've posted before and got no help at ALL. I know back when i was posting they had some data loss stuff going on... but it was still a huge bummer...

I've built the GGG Rat kit, and I found it to be very good. I've actually bought a few kits from JD at GGG, and he's a very friendly and helpful guy to deal with.

With GGG stuff, I find it helpful to download all of the documents that JD makes available on his "projects" page. They usually include the layout, schematic, parts list, as well as basic instructions.
