BUILDING THE ULTIMATE RACK SYSTEM!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Here I am, virtually a newbie (4 YEARS) in this wonderful world of the bass clef. I am a converted guitarist who has found a new home down here. As of now I am looking to build a rack system complete with any and all pieces needed to have the best sound I can get. I understand beauty is in the eye (ear) of the beholder, and furthermore, different styles, genre, and approaches will ultimately sway what would be THE BEST rig to build.

I, myself, am in a heavy rock band tuned to drop A#, currently utilizing a Warwick 5 string Corvette $$, a 4 string Fender J-Bass retro-ed with RioGrande's-MuyGrande pickups, to an Aphex Punch Factory compressor into an Ampeg SVT CL (USA) pushing a Traynor 8X8 and 2-SWR Son of Bertha15's. Soon, the Traynor 8X8 wil be replaced with an Ampeg 810E. I am going to build my rack into this setup...but don't let it affect your decision here...

...essentially..."WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE RACK SYSTEM?" ELABORATE ON YOUR COMPONENT CHOICES (DO NOT CONSIDER PRICE OR THE AMOUNT OF GEAR YOU WILL HAVE TO TOTE)

Really the Warwick Jonas Hellborg rig would be the ultimate for your application. If you didn't want to go that route, then maybe an Ampeg SVT-II non-Pro with an Aphex 651. Add a boost or fuzz pedal for "those moments".

What does this have to do with effects? Most of us have pedal effects instead of racks, if that is what you are getting at. Myself, I don't like rack systems. They give me the creeps.

oK...so maybe I've posted under the wrong sub-category. Would you be so kind as to direct this newbie in the right direction?

Amps forum. Also, just to kind of clarify what you're asking for, a "rack system" can be a question of the core units (head or preamp/power amp) or it can be a question of additional processors (compressor, exciter, additional EQ) or it can be a question of accessories (power strip, lights, "power conditioner", rack drawer, etc. Or of course all of the above. Be aware that each element of all that has dozens (if not hundreds) of threads already, debating what's best. And of course nobody will ever agree on all of them in combination. So your best bet is to read up on the individual subjects, narrow down what you're really asking about, and post more specific questions that are not already answered in depth.

TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING and words like "ultimate" are considered a bit silly since all this stuff is so dependent on personal tastes, expectations, budgets, purposes, etc.

I'm not at all trying to bust on you, just pointing you in the right direction.

Thank you for your attention. I will do just as you have suggested. I knew that if I were to have replies on this they would have wide-ranging answers and I would be prepared for it. But I didn't realize that I left the subject too open. Just looking for ideas and the resonings behind them.

I think you're asking mostly about your amp setup, in which case the Amps Forum is a better place for your question (as bongo previously indicated). However, many racked-amp users will also run a rack-mounted compressor in their chain, which will bring you back to this forum (start with the links in bongo's sig).

If you start going down the effects road, most of the habitual effects users that haunt these halls have concluded that pedal effects generally offer the best in variety and usability.

Happy hunting!
