a bunch of m5 sound clips

I finally had some time today to program up a bunch of presents on my m5. Since there doesn't seem to be much of a reservoir of sounds clips of the m5 on bass, I recorded a pile of them for all to enjoy, or sneer at, as the situation warrants. (Sure, it's the same sounds as the m9/m13, but why not?)

In case you want to hear the clean reference tones, they're here. I used two basses, a fretted 4 with a p pickup, and a fretless 5 J, with both pickups on full. Everything is recorded through an EBS multicomp into a PBDDI then into protools with no plugins.

Now for the fun stuff. Each of these contains 6 clips--the first three are always on the fretted, and the second three are always on the fretless. There's plenty more in there, but these are my 24 favorite sounds, at least for now. I didn't record any delays or reverbs--not because they aren't any good, but because I just don't use those effects on bass.

1. Dirt. I didn't have high hopes for dirt sounds when I was considering an m5, but hey, some of these aren't so bad! The order is: Line 6 Distortion (useless on guitar but kind of cool on bass), Sub-Octave Fuzz, Muff, Line 6 Drive, Overdrive, and Fuzz Face. Those last three, I just realized, are very similar. Guess I can't avoid that tone, for some reason.

2. Pitch shifting. Octaver, Pitchglide (+1 octave), Smart Harmony, Ring mod, Frequency Shift, and Ring mod again.

3. Modulation. Analog chorus, Barberpole phaser, 80a Flanger, Opto trem, Goatkeeper, and Leslie.

4. Synths and Filters. Now we're getting wacky. Octasynth, Synthomatic, Attack Synth, Synth strings, Seeker, and Synthomatic again (that last one goes really low--watch your speakers!).

That's the lot of them. Share and enjoy!

Jumbotron,

Thanks for posting those links. These are the first M5/9/13 synth clips I've heard and they sound pretty decent. I liked the "Synth Strings" a lot. Are there lots of synth possibilities with this pedal?

Sounds pretty good! I look forward to the M9 I just pulled the trigger on. How difficult is it to dial in those overdrive/fuzz sounds? Do the tone controls have a way to get a nice even bass response without having a super hi-cut (mud)?

It does a lot of synth stuff, but I'm a little conflicted about it. It doesn't do well the conventional synth sounds that you might get out of a G5 or a Markbass SS. No Stevie Wonder sounds or Flashlight, at least nothing that I can dial in. I think where it excels is noises that are just plain weird. The Octasynth is really cool for that, and will self-oscillate in interesting ways.

I used an FM4 for a long time, and the m5 uses the same basic sounds, but it's different in ways that surprise me a little bit. It tracks lower than the FM4 (I really couldn't get that thing to track reliably below an A). But somehow it doesn't track as fast. I dial up similar sounds to the ones I got on the FM4, and it really won't tolerate and speed at all. It will do some pretty decent slow stuff and swells, though.

I found that dialing in the dirt sounds was pretty easy. Most of them have very basic 3-band eq setups, which aren't exactly optimized for bass frequencies, but which work ok. The key seems to be getting the gain levels right.

If I get time, I can put some of those up. But I really find the Q-Tron emulators are pretty useless on bass--at least, I can't get them to give me anything like a decent sound (I might not be good at dialing them in, FWIW). In part, that's why I've got an m5 instead of an m9--I want the space on my board for a good filter (in my case, I'm smitted with the Q-Balls).

Nice clips. I recently sold my DD-20, so I've got space on my board and I'm going to order myself one of these later today to fill it I think. Seems like a great wildcard pedal with lots of effects just in case you need one.

Nice clips! For another $100, a used M9 is totally worth it.
