| | | | Buying used effects pedals?

I'm new to this whole effects thing. I'm going to buy the Boss OBD-3, but the downside is it's $100. However, I can get a used one for only $50! Are there any dangers of buying effects used? Like not functioning properly, ect.? Or does this sound like a good deal? |

| | | | Bought used pedals from the classifieds forum. 3 of them, all work fine. I'd check the users feedback and use this site.

I did have one arrive DOA from ebay, but never an issue here on TB. Most people dealing in our classifieds here are honest about the gear they have for sale, and most will send you a recording (video or at least audio) of the effect in use so you can hear it working.
If you're unsure whether you will like an effect for you personal application, or you don't have the money to buy new, I highly recommend getting used ones from here. Ebay is generally safe too, but pay with paypal if using ebay so you have some security on your purchase.

First, I'm relatively new to pedals too. I've been playing bass for 16 years. Until now, I owned 3 pedals, and all of them I sold within a month of purchase.
Due to a new type of gig, I now have a Boss CE-5, Sansamp Tech 21 Bass Driver, MXR DC Brick, and Pedaltrain PT-1.
I bought two of these on Talk Bass, and two locally through CL. I didn't have any issues with either. I prefer TB, because I don't have to drive anywhere, and people seem more honest here...
Check the Boss out. IMO, their pedals are okay, but many other makers have far better offerings.
Good luck!

| | | | I bought an odb-3 blind for 45 bucks off craigs list. Thing is it turns out I knew the dude through local metal bands. Otherwise I would have found a way to make sure it works. It was pretty beat up but I mean it's a boss pedal the housing can take a beating. |

A Boss CL5 Chorus for $50.00. with power supply. A Boss GE7 EQ and an AC2 Acoustic simulator both for $40.00. Didn't even want the AC2. Figured I'd flip it someday but it's still sitting on my shelf. Boss LMB3 enhancer/limiter for $35.00. Just make sure you test before you buy.

| | | | I have bought and sold many used pedals, maybe about 100 or so. I haven't had any issues to speak of...except maybe something not being what I anticipated. I wouldn't have any issues with buying from here...have had nothing but positive experinces. |

Just make sure you get a photo of it before you buy, so you know exactly what it looks like before you get it. TB has been good about that, and since members stay here and post here, they will be honest about their sales. If not, no one else would deal with them, word spreads quickly if someone burns someone else here. Great social accountability.
I have a few new pedals, which I love. But would have bought them used if had a little more patience. (Bought them soon after their creator put em up for sale). I am glad I supported the builder directly though. And it is nice to have a sparkly new effects pedal.
But, if treated well, most any effect pedals will function just a well used as they do new, so little worries about getting a 'worn' pedal (except cosmetically of course, but, some like the 'mojo').
Welcome to the illness... um... I mean, fun!

I've had to replace a few switches (3DPT sucks, it's not the seller's fault) but otherwise it has been a 100% positive experience. Selling/ buyers feedback is good to look at, as well as other posts by the seller (specifically here) to judge their overall persona. It may be getting picky, but there's no question buying sight unseen can be stressful. However, TB is simply amazing for buying, selling, and especially learning! |

The internet is full of shenanigans and it’s quite refreshing to find a group of strangers who are respectful wholesome people. TB classifieds are were it's at, not only have I never had a bad experience it is very rare to hear of one on here. I supposed it's because we are united by the low end! |

| | Supporting Member | | | | | It's the ONLY way to get the older, vintage pedals or basses/amps for that matter that some of us prefer. That said, I've never had any issues buying from fellow TB'ers, as well as CL or eBay.
By using a credit card with any transaction you are also very protected against any fraud. And chances are with local CL you'll actually meet the person anyway and try it out. eBay has great fraud protection as well. The people here at TB are great. Very minimal risk with any transaction including expensive amps and basses as you can plainly see. Many players have feedback histories. That said, I have NEVER seen any negative feedback! It is a rather unique unspoken bond that keeps all of us very respectful of one another - regardless of how a person might be in the "outside" world I imagine. Once here, everyone more or less is on their best behavior - especially for any transactions. In this day and age it's really quite phenomenal.

With a little diligence I wouldn't be afraid to buy a used pedal. Probably over half of what I own I bought used though so I've had nothing but positive results. *knocks on wood*

I've purchased two pedals and an LH1000 from the TB classifieds through Paypal. All were pleasant experiences and great deals as well. If the pedals cosmetics are important to you be sure to ask for pictures, though most adds do provide them.
