BYOC - Envelope Filter - DOD 440 Clone

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone bought a build kit for this clone? I got some gas for a Envelope filter that no one else got within my musical company.
Sounds good? Was it easy to build? (i know how to use a solder iron) Was the instructions well made?

I can tell you that the instructions for the kit should be right on the web page and I don't think he mails you anything more than that. You should be able to look over them and decide if you can handle the build.

I have it, but have not used it yet. The instructions are clear and if you are a first time builder he will include a little practice kit for you to work on. All you will need is some solder and an iron.

It looks a very interesting pedal. The new version comes with the components to make it bass-friendly and with an extra switch it is possible to combine the guitar and bass version in the same pedal.

I was thinking of buying one but recently I bought a Maxon AF9 and I cannot think to an Auto-wah sound that this little moster cannot produce...

I had one, and it was great. Build was easy (but I have plenty of experience). I sold it, as it was too tame for what I wanted in an envelope filter. I cannot speak highly enough of BYOC though, love that stuff

from the online sound samples and such, it doesn't seem very "funky." and what's a filter without the funk?

I have mine working now, but for guitar, not bass. All I can say is that in the normal mode it sounds exactly like the old DOD440. I mean, exactly as I remember my old 440. Just great.

hey, I'm new here.....so hey!

anyway, i ordered a kit for the DOD 440 from generalguitargadgets.com, and im pretty psyched! my buddy from a band called JuliusC uses a QTron, and i love that, but the 440 is a cheaper/easier build, so we'll see!

Mine is for guitar. If you want it to work for bass my understanding is that you change one resistor and you are good to go. Actually, if you have ever used an old 440 for bass, this operates just like that. However, you can mod it so the trigger is listening for bass frequencies.

If I could do it all over again I would kill the fixed wah option and use the switch to switch between bass and guitar frequency response.

Sounds pretty promising. So how is the build overall. Take a few days of leisure time? Im still up in arms about ordering either the delay or the filter from BYOC

I bought the filter assembled, but also picked up a trem and the confidence booster unassembled.

Loads of guitar soldering but this will be my first on circuit boards. I will try to post how it went after I get the trem done.

BYOC says Radiohead uses a 440 (legit selling point ), any idea on which albums/songs and whether it was O'brien or one of the Greenwoods?

I'm waiting for my Confidence Boost, Lazy Sprocket and Armstrong Twin. If all goes well and y'all post a good review of the 440 clone I'll probably get it.

I've got a Lazy Sprocket, curious what you think of it. To me it sounds more like a synth's envelope than a cello's. I've got one setting that seems to work for me.

I think it was the guitar player in Radiohead that uses the 440. I believe he also would feed distortion into the front end to get more dramatic sounds. And sometimes they would use the Mutronics Mutator filter, (like the end solo of Paranoid Android if I remember correctly).

I built this pedal about a month ago. I really don't remember exactly what needs changed for bass, I know there's a few capacitors and such, but in the instructions it says "BASS MOD" in like size 20 font. Its pretty impossible to miss.

I really didn't have any trouble building it. If you can handle a soldering iron, and you aren't in a rush, you should have no problems.

I'm pretty satisfied with the sounds of the pedal. I think its fairly funky, but I'm not an envelope filter junky or anything.

Thanks for the quick reply, very cool. Today while trying to assemble it I realized that I downloaded the manual for the "new version" which does not work with the "old version" kit that I bought (not knowing then that the new one is better for bass). That's why I didn't see the BASS MOD instructions. I have contacted byoc for the old manual and hope they'll send me one. Failing that, does anyone have the old manual/instructions handy and wouldnt mind sending me a quick email with it or a link to it? I want to work on it on monday when I can use my father's solder equipment (and his kind help of course )

Anyway, the newly built Confidence Builder works nicely and I spent a few ...seconds playing around with it before putting it away.

I found out from the manual of the new version that I need to replace the 2x 0.022uF caps with 2x 0.1uF caps. Keith from BYOC confirmed that this works as well for the old version. I did that but the thing still doesnt work right, probably requires some troubleshooting. I've invested 4 afternoons already and we'll see when I get around to do more...
