Which BYOC kit next?

Sign in to disble this ad
OK guys, since I finished high school a few weeks ago I've been bored out of my mind. So, in need of both new toys to play with and something to do with myself, I've turned to making BYOC pedals. I'm about 2/3 of the way to completing my Leeds fuzz, but I still have time to kill until I actually have something to do, so I want to build another pedal. I have enough money to get one more kit, and I've narrowed it down to 4 (EDIT: oops, I meant 3) choices: the Mouse, the Flanger, and Optical Compressor.

The Mouse seems kind of unnecessary, because, while I've been GASing for a RAT for a while now, I feel I already have enough dirt boxes (the Leeds will be my 4th) and a RAT will be somewhat redundant.

In fact, the only 2 types of pedals I really need/want at this point are a flanger and a compressor. The BYOC Flanger seemed promising at first, but what I'm really after is the thick, lush sound of the A/DA Flanger, which the BYOC doesn't seem to be able to get, at least from the low quality Youtube reviews Ive found (which is too bad, because I don't really need the super extreme settings on the A/DA, I just really like the somewhat tamer settings). I could be wrong about that though. Cound anyone here comment on that?

Also, I'm interested in the Optical Compressor, but I'd really like to see Bongomania's review of it first. HAve you finished the pedal, or have you just not written up the review?

4, you say?
The Mouse is sweet, had one for a while.
If you're building just to build, the Flanger does look like a lot of fun..I've been eagerly awaiting Bongo's review on the Opto-comp too..

Ya, originally I included the 5 Knob Compressor, but after reading Bongo's other Ross clone reviews I've decided against it

BTW, unless someone can correct my assumptions about the Flanger or dissuade me from the Optical Comp, I'll probably go with the latter. A flanger would be more of a fun toy to play with (at least in my case), but a compressor is a bit more practical.

I was merely pointing out the contradiction

Still no opinions, but I think flanger first, then comp.
It's more of understanding a pedal from the ground up. Flange is easier to point out as it's very audible in changing your tone, ya know?

God d**** it Ebennetts! You again?

Anyway, I know what both effects do and how to use them, I'm just trying to decide which one I want to build. I only have enough money for 1 of them. Otherwise I'd just order both kits.

BTW, I might actually go with the flanger. I saw a few more demo's and I'm liking it more now. The only one's I watched before were BYOC's (which hardly even demonstrated its flanging) and gearmanndudes (which left me a little unimpressed). Although I'd really like to hear the thing on bass
