BYOC Opticomp Optical Compressor - reviews anyone?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey folks,

I'm about to do some byoc build projects and I noticed that they have a new optical compressor to build.

http://www.buildyourownclone.com/opticomp.html

I've searched a bunch and there doesn't seem to be any reviews except for on the byoc forum, and those guys are mostly guitarists, so there really isn't anything about how it works with bass.

I love my compulator, but I'm wondering how good this thing is.

Anyone tried it?

I'm here, I just (a) haven't tried it and (b) can't afford to buy every new pedal I see. I've actually been out of work for months, so the comps I have bought came out of the food budget. Either I'll buy some of these BYOC units when I get a job, or you can buy it for me.

Unless you can't perf/etch, there is no reason for you to not build the flatline found at diystompboxes. The flatline is very very similar to the compulator. A friend of mine has the compulator and I ended up building a flatline for him too. I think the compulator may be a little better for guitar because its a little cleaner and it has (lengthy electronical bs that i decided to edit out because it went on too long) that makes it a little 'zingier'. For the small difference though, I preferred the flatline on bass.

astralis - That sounds really cool. I'm baby stepping my way into building pedals, so the pre printed byoc boards are the best way to start. Hopefully I'll work my way up to building an amp when I'm comfortable enough.

Bongomania - You and your crazy priorities... like "food".

If I ever get around to actually building it (and it doesn't turn out like a POS), I'll let you borrow it for a test run, but I think my first project is going to be the trem.

Anyone else out there try this one?

I wonder how good this would be as a transparent compressor/peak limiter?

The BYOC is a DOD 280 clone, so maybe someone has someone has tried that one too.

Bump. I just bought this pedal and wanted to know how it sounded if anyone has used it. Also, if you've built this, did you do the bass guitar mod with the 0.1 uF capacitors?

Interesting thread....subscribed.

I've never put together an electronic circuit before, so, I'm a little reluctant to build a pedal. However, while poking through the BYOC site I found this link to another site that builds the pedals for you....about $30-$40.00 more than the kit. The Opti built is $105.00 + shipping.

If it is comparable to a Demeter...that is still a great deal! Linky:
