A/C adapter mod for pedals w/o jacks

Sign in to disble this ad
I think I heard someone mention that there is an adapter or mod for pedals that don't have, or have a busted, a/c adapter that plugs into the 9v battery plug.
Did I hear this right or is this wishful thinking?

Application: I'm contemplating getting a Black Russian Big Muff, but the idea that it doesn't have a a/c jack scares me. The pedal is a good price but there's no point in saving money in one place if I'm just going to lose it in burning through 9v batteries.

Yes, there is a battery clip adapter. All of the major manufacturers of "universal" power supplies offer these adapters - Visual Sound (1 Spot), Godlyke, Voodoo Lab, MXR, and so on. Some supplies come with them, but even if it doesn't, they're really cheap by themselves.

It's not difficult to add on a real DC jack, but most people prefer not to modify their pedals, especially if they plan to sell them later. Some pedals which lack DC jacks can be quite valuable, as it's something you often see in old rare pedals. The black Russian Big Muff is an exception because it's really cheap.

Not to mention, you'd need to find a good place to add a jack, drill a hole in the chassis, solder in the necessary wiring, etc...

If you do decide to actually drill the enclosure and add a jack you'll need to wire it like this:

i did this to an old MXR Distortion + Pedal (the older script version) and i kind of regret having done so. I dilled a hole in the front of the chassis (couldn't do it in the back - can't remember why) and connected the adapter.

it works just fine - just looks stupid and i'm pretty sure that if i tried to re-sell the thing i'd have to lie and say the previous owner did the "modding."

Hindsight being what it is, i think i would have preferred just dealing with batteries.
