Calling All Jamiroquai or synth nuts!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me what's being used at 2:47 of this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUHodalek8s

Is it a pedal/multi-effects unit or is it a synthesizer? If it's a pedal type deal what one could be used to cop that sound?

Thank you to all....

Sounds to me like the Deep Impact or similar synth pedal, though certainly it could have been the keyboardist. I'm not sure which pedals in current production could cop it... maybe the Chunk synth?

I'm pretty sure thats Stuart Zender, and that he used a Boss multieffect- The GT6b iirc? It's been a while since I sold most of them, but I think I could get that tone with the SYB-3 (although hard to track that fast), korg G5 for sure... maybe the BSW, though I don't really remember. I haven't looked into the Deep Impact much but I think Ive heard tones in that neighborhood coming from the DI as well.

The Chunk can do it with the first preset- Gobstopper. The G5 will do it for sure with flawless tracking, and I think you could pull it off with about $100 and either a Boss SYB-3 or SYB-5. You could definitely do it with which ever Boss multi (iirc) Zender did it with, though I don't know how much those are going for- probably pretty cheap.

Probably one of the synth bass patches on the Boss ME-6B he used to use back then.

Hey guys thanks for all the input.

The Deep Impact looks and sounds really good(from what I've gleaned from youtube). Expensive though. Same goes for the Octavius, is that the Chunk you were referring to Fightthepower? If it was a pedal that thing tracks pretty damn fast. I will definitely look into the Korg G5, but I have a feeling they're probably gettin' up there in price and scarcity. Same might go for the ME-6B as well. The Boss SYBs' seems promising any other ideas?

Again, thanks guys

The Deep Impact's 9th Preset does that exact sound if you set it right.

Up and away,

All the ideas from you guys have been great so far. Are there any pedals still in production that could approximate this sound that isn't $500 bucks and up? How 'bout the ME-20B?

There's an SYB-5 in the classifieds for I think $90 that would fit the bill nicely.

Hey Fightthepower,

Thanks for your suggestions. I saw that you had a G5, nice piece of gear that is. I just caught a quick vid about it on youtube. I just found out a friend of mine has a SYB-3 so I'll give that a go first(f they can actually find it). Do you know how it sounds compared to the SYB-5? You also mentioned tracking issues, not quick enough? Many thanks again.

None of these electric bass synth pedals track fast enough for me not to be annoyed. Haven't tried the Chunk Systems, though. Probably won't ever, either. You gotta really like bass synth to spend $600 on one. I'd rather put up with the lousy tracking

Sounds about right for me as well Jimmy(if I may call you just Jimmy ). I love the sound that can be had by those pedals but not for 600 bones. Ach, what's a guy to do then . However, I do recall a local mall bank with rather lax security.......

The G5's track flawlessly, but they aren't the warmest sounding pedals I've ever heard.. The sound quality of the SYB-3 was superior in my opinion, but the tracking wasn't stellar. If I were you I would go try your friends pedal and see what you think. For short synth blasts with careful clean playing you might find it does the trick just fine. I've never heard or used the SYB-5, but from what I've read it's supposed to track better.

+1 for the keyboardist playin that part..at least from what i can see in the video (and it seems to me that's not the bassist playing that part)
