Can an AC adaptor be fried if connected to the wrong pedal?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, my girlfriend connected a 14v AC adaptor to a boss pedal--the pedal is, of course, fried.

Today i went to use the adaptor and it seems to be busted. Can the adaptor itself break from outputting power to the wrong thing?

Thanks.

the transformer inside the pedal could short out internally, yeah, or an internal electrolytic cap could have popped. does it smell funky?

no funky smelll. just to be clear, though, i'm talking about the AC adaptor (wall wart). Could it have fried also? The pedal is definitely dead--no surprise there. But now the wall wart won't power anything, as though it died in the same fire. Is that possible, or is it just a coincidence?

It's absolutely possible. In addition to the transformer, there's a little rectifier in there- it's probably blown a diode while trying to drive the damaged pedal.

well, it's back to jameco then for a new Ac adaptor. Do y'all recommend any other basic adaptors? The Jameco ones are definitely half the price of radio shack and much quieter. Any other recs though? mouser or digi key or?

The Danelectro DA-1 "zero hum" adapters work fine with Boss pedals. Much less expensive than the Boss adapters--up here in Canada anyway...

sorry, when i said "transformer inside the pedal", i meant "transformer inside the wart" - there's in all likelihood no transformer in the pedal heh.

well, thanks for the advice y'all.

i'll look into ordering a DA-1, but i'm still curious if anyone else has tried any number of non-music-company-produced wall warts.

Ive used walwarts for copiers, printers..you name it. They're butt-simple to design really. Just some cheap out on a couple of internal caps to filter things out after the rectifier.
