You need to try as many out as you can get your hands on. Compression is one of the hardest things to describe and quantify. You can talk about attack and decay, threshold and soft versus hard knee til the cows come home but compressors all have their own sound. You will waste a lot of time and money buying and selling compressors on other peoples recommendations.
Sound quality is subjective at the best of times and even more so with compression. Dbx compressors are 'industry standard' with pa companies but is that for punch or for gain control? You should avoid alesis 3630 comps for anything bass related though. Awful with bass drum and guitar.
For a good reviews of bass comps check out ovnilab.com
Still subjective but a good place to get in the right ballpark for your own testing.
You will know as soon as you hear the 'right' comp for you. Good luck.

I have a Milkbox and love the tone and punch (and really love the price) but the noise was a little too much for in-ear play. But I just picked up a Diamond BCP-1 and can honestly say it is magical compressor. My great Sadowsky tone got better and even more thick and punchy - and the noise floor is virtually invisible. Bongo's review sold me and he was dead on - one great pedal and a tone improver.

You should be able to find a Markbass Compressore within your budget - I just bought a used one for $119 from Guitar Center's used gear section.

The EBS has been my choice for years, I never leave home without it.
Its basic sound is rather subtile, not too extreme (no "Sledgehammer" tone), but it gives all my basses that extra punch while maintaining a very natural tone.
Especially in a busy mix the EBS is my secret weapon.
