Can the Brown Dog do Mammoth?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey folks,
I know that they're similar animals, but I'm having a hard time justifying 350 on a Woolly Mammoth. I am wondering if the Brown Dog can be set to a Mammoth-esque heavy gated fuzz with massive low end? Most of the samples I've heard haven't been that deep with the Dog, in which case I'm stuck with the Zvex. Anyway, just checking for people who've had both!
Thanks,
Ryan

This thread could sound really odd to someone, like me, if they don't know what a you're referring to.

I own the brown dog but Ive only had second hand experiance with the Mammoth.
My gut says no, the BD is a great pedal with lots of low end but it has a different charecter - it's synthy and hard but polite on all settings, where the Mammoth to me has always sounded ragged and out of control.

None the less try the BD if you get a chance, it may still serve your need.

The OP seems to be looking to satisfy his 'massive' low end needs and is subsequently finding it hard getting into a dog which is not quite deep enough for him.

What part didn't you understand?

If you want Mammoth tone on the cheap, get a Zvex Mastotron. End of story. 90% of the Mammoth tone at less than 1/3 of the price.

I've owned a Mastotron, A/B'd it with a Mammoth, and I now own a Brown Dog. The Mastotron and Brown Dog may have a couple of similar sounds after some knob turning, but truly, they're fairly different. The Brown Dog is more of a straight fuzz with strong gating ability, whereas the Mastotron (and by my comparison, the Mammoth) is more of a glitchy, super-low end heavy, almost farty distortion. Both do the gated sound (although the Mastotron is not truly gated, it sure as hell sounds like it), but in terms of tone, they really are fairly different.

I'm tellin' you, if you're after the Mammoth sound, get the Mastotron. Owning one, I followed up on a local ad and went to check out a Mammoth. I brought my Mastotron just for kicks, and after ~20 mins of playing with both, I left with my Mastotron and my cash.

mostly +1 re Hollow Man's thougts on Mammoth / Mastotron.
I own both and if I could only take one pedal of any description to a desert island, it would definitely be the Mammoth above all others; whereas if I had no Mammoth, I'm not sure I would take the Mastotron at all. I reckon the Masto gets more like 75-80% of Mammoth's tones and layers.

I've tried the dog a couple fo times; but it never made me fall in love with it like the Mammoth. I've heard others say the Dog is a great jack of all trades; but master of none. I would definitely say the Mammoth is the master of its universe and I wouldn't say that of the Mastotron either.

So If you can afford it i say go for the Mammoth and enjoy it for a very long time.
NB. the mammoth does prefer passive signals; but IME it does work with active too, but differently.

PS. i think you can get a lot of style, tone, glitch/not-glitch out of the mammoth too.
