Can I use a cross over with my rig?

Maybe someone can help me. I have a 1x15 Eden (200watts @ 8ohms) plus a 2x10 Eden (250 Watts @ 8 ohms). I use a Hartke 550 Head (500 Watts @ 4 ohms) to power both of them. It sounds great (until I turn the bass up). The 2x10 can't hold that much bottom. Its frequency response is about 62Hz which is not a whole lot. The "15" can hold really nice. So, my question is if I buy a cross over, to send the low frequencies to the 15 and the mid and highs to the 2x10, would that work?

to use the crossover you would need two amps, unless your head has biamping capabilities, but im not familiar with it. if you mean can you run the speaker out into the crossover and then to the speakers, thats a big no. crossovers arent meant to handle powered signals from the amp, only line level signals.

If your 15 doesn't have a horn, you could try one of these:

Peavey ECS-150X Crossover 150 Hz 2-Way

You would replace the input terminal on the 15 with this. Plug the output from your amp into the full range input, then the hi out into your 210.

Thanks, my 15 has a horn/tweeter in it. So I guess, I'll have to buy a better 210 Cab.

Yes, you can crossover your speaker cabs… just do a google search for “loudspeaker crossovers” and you will find a lot of information. PartsExpress is a good source for parts.

You may just want to run a high pass filter (maybe a 6dB filter @100Hz) with your 2x10 to block the lower frequencies.

i didnt think of a crossover in that way of him modifying his cabs. i just figured he meant something like rack unit. but thats a good idea if he can do mods himself.

Good question! I do not mean to hijack this thread but if I do it might help out the OP. I am running a 4 ohm 410hlf and planning to run either a 8ohm or 4 ohm 1x18 cab (which ever I find). I want to run all those low freqs into the 1x18 and the rest of the freq spectrum into the 410hlf. How can I do this? I am running a shuttle 6.0 head.

The OP wouldn’t need to modify his cabinets. Speaker crossovers can be external to the cabinets. For the simple HP filter that I suggested, paralleling two 100uF capacitors and splicing them into a speaker cable would work for the 2x10... it is simple and cheap.

You are looking to divide the frequencies to the cabs, so you may want to look at the crossover that punkrocko linked in his post.

Better get the right impedance cab to match your prepackaged crossover and the other cab.

Or you can buy the components and wire it up yourself with some help.
