can i use guitar effects boxes with bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi. I'm a guitar player switching over to bass. Can I use my stompboxes with my bass rig? If not, can you give me some recs on cheap chorus, compression, and possible tube preamp efx boxes?

I play a '62 Fender JB through an Acoustic 150 head and a Sonic 15" speaker cab.

thanks

Sure you can. Some may sound better than others and some may sound like absolute dog doo-doo while others will sound better on bass than on guitar. Play around with them and see what you like, and check out the threads here on TB. All manner of stompboxes reviewed here.

PS: I'm a convert to bass as well. What pedals do you have?

stay away from dan electro pedals on bass. I bought the cheap fab metal distortion pedal. It sounds like my bass is farting. But my buddys digitech metal master pedal sounds amazing on my bass I think it sounds better on my bass then with his guitar. Im one of those guys who doesnt really use any effects just bass straight into the amp. Its easyer that way for me.

Do guitar pedals work with bass? Can I damage them this way?

Guitar pedals will work with a bass, but the sound may or may not be as good as it could be. Some guitar pedals tend to suck a lot of bass out of the signal, or modulation-type effects tend to effect different frequencies causing less than ideal tone in some cases.

However, the good news, is that the signal passed from a bass guitar, even with 18V active electronics is not powerful enough to damage any sort of pedal, guitar or bass- so try everything you can.

Justin Meldal-Johnson says: "Guitar pedals aren't just for guitarists; I often see bassists with bass-centric pedals only, and that's far too limiting."

Nothing over 40hz - it just stings a little.

It depends on the pedal, the Danelectro Chili Dog octave is real nice sounding, it does the Boss OC-2 sound better then the Boss OC-3 does in OC-2 mode.

Absolutely, the original steel case Danos are very good in fact the 18v Cool Cat is IMHO one of the best chorus pedals out there! In addition to the Cat I have used the Daddy-O overdrive, the Dan-echo and the Fab Tone distortion and like them very much. The only downside is that the in/out jacks are plastic and board mounted. I would suggest that if they are to have a regular home on your board either stick them down and leave them wired up or re-box them and add metal jacks (did this to my Cool Cat when one of the jacks failed)

I am collecting the whole series!
