Can you get this tone without distortion?

Hello people!

this song got me thinking (bass starts at 0.07):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=so6MprZ2Bmw

Awesome tone, kinda reminds me of Bob Weston from Shellac.
But, is there something going on (VT bass, Rusty Box?) or is it just bass -> amp?

The only information i can provide you with - the bassist uses a P-Bass.

ps: i hate when the guitar comes up and buries the bass.

Hammering roundwounds with a pick really hard can get close, but that's in all likelyhood an SVT with a touch of grit coming off the amp head. Or some other amp doing similarly.

Perhaps try tapping with Chromes?
