Can you use guitar effects on bass?

I know it's possible but I heard that they don't pass the lower frequencies too well. I was curious because I'm interested in DIY FX but they never seem to have plans for bass FX so I was curious if guitar effects would work or not on bass.

Thanks!

As the FAQ states, you can use them but the results will vary.

Most modulation (chorus, phaser, delay) will be fine and the majority of filters too.

Where guitar effects most often fall flat on bass is dirt (overdrive, distortion or fuzz). Some will work as well on guitar or bass but many guitar pedals will cut low end.

any effect can be mod'd to increase the bass response. you just have to find someone who knows what they're doing. check out:

http://www.putnamguitars.com

he has a mods section on his website. he can build/mod pretty much anything. a lot of people here on TB have been sending their VT Bass pedals to him to add a DI.

he made a fuzz pedal for me from the ground up called, "joe fuzz". it's my live sound. deep, dirty, and mean. i can also get a nice soft fuzz from it that sounds like a tube amp cranked.
