Caroline Guitar Company - Wave Cannon

Throughout my 10+ year quest to find the bass distortion/fuzz sound I've always heard in my head, I've tried everything from the Big Muff to the Sansamp VT and just about everything in between.

Most recently, I've been using the Fulltone Bass Drive - Mosfet version. Although the Bass Drive is a fine pedal, I always felt as if it was lacking something. It just never felt quite "organic" enough to me.

Recently, a guitarist friend of mine brought a pedal to a gig I was playing that he wanted me to try out on bass. It was called the Wave Cannon and made by a small outfit based out of Charleston, S.C. called Caroline Guitar Company.

Finally, there it was - the sound I've been looking for all these years. The pedal can go from a slightly overdriven sound to raging, full-on distortion - all without losing the end that makes you feel like you are still playing a bass guitar. I was so impressed that I immediately placed an order for one.

I'm not one who typically shares his experiences on Talkbass - I'm more inclined to read what others have to say. Nevertheless, I am so impressed with the Wave Cannon that I felt compelled to "spread the gospel." If you get a chance, you should definitely check out this pedal.

I tried one of these today and want to get one, as it works on both guitar and bass and could replace more than one pedal on my board. As the thread originator noted, this is an "organic" sounding pedal.

I compared the Wave Cannon against a boutique Tube Scramer-style OD (that also works with bass) using a 1974 Fender Precision into a solid state SWR amplifier and 2-10" cabinet. The Wave Cannon appears to be a veritable Swiss Army knife of distortion, with a lot of boost, some OD, some Rat-like distortion and some fuzz when cranked. The Wave Cannon is very sensitive to playing dynamics and the instrument's volume knob, and it did not hide my mistakes in technique!

Because this pedal does so much, one has to be careful with attempts to fine tune. My dedicated OD pedal has more OD sounds/settings, though it is a one-trick-pony as compared with the Wave Cannon.

While I don't want to part with the TS style OD, because I like a more "vintage" compressed sound for some of the music styles I play, I thought the Wave Cannon sounded musical in even the higher, more extreme settings. I am thinking about parting with a couple of my more extreme sounding fuzz pedals to make room for a Wave Cannon.
