Catalinbread Super Chile PICOSO! versus Electro Harmonix LPB-1

There's no real competition on this one, for me anyways. I wanted an extremely large clean boost, and thats what I get with the SCP. Other than that, I still figure these clips are required.

First off, here is a pic of the 3 wave forms for unity, half, and full gain:

I find that the SCP compresses at a different level than the LPB, so the LPB sounds a little louder, even at half gain, unless the SCP is on "fat" mode. Even on "fat" mode tho, the SCP seems more even than the LPB. I think the LPB tends to enhance the mids some.

The other major diff is that the LPB can cut as well as boost. 9 o'clock is about unity on the LPB instead of minimum, like the SCP. I sorta guessed at the half way gain mark of the LPB, setting it around 1 o'clock for that clip.

Anyways, CLIPS!!!!!!:

Unity Gain
Half Gain
Full Gain

Playing is as follows:
  • Fingerstyle
    • Clean
    • LPB-1
    • Super Chile Picoso (clean mode)
    • Super Chile Picoso (fat mode)
  • Pickstyle
    • Clean
    • LPB-1
    • Super Chile Picoso (clean mode)
    • Super Chile Picoso (fat mode)

Well done, as always!

If you're not gonna be using that LPB anymore...

Very nice!
I actually prefer the Picoso sound. A little warmer and smoother, but the EHX sounds equally good just a little brighter to my ears.

Each one has definitely got some good points IMHO. The one thing that sealed it for me is that I found boosting into my Muff'n (for more gain), the SCP smoothness pays off

I also rthink the SCPs "Fat" switch makes it a little more versatile.
Not that i'd use the option all the time, but it's nice to have it.

Mr. Tulip, what effect does the Picoso have on your VT Bass? Does it push it harder?

Yes it does. Actually it behaves quite like a tube should, based on my experiences with the Muff'n and Paradriver.

I have only done limited testing, but plan to do more
