a certain kind of buzz...

Sign in to disble this ad
do you ever get a particular a sound in your head and get frustrated that you can't find the pedal that will help you get a little closer to that sound? this is the problem i've been having for a while now. i need y'all to reccomned me a "buzzy" distortion, or perhaps an overdrive, that:

-isn't a fuzz!
-may or may not have substantial low end loss (i've found my dod meat box is great for bringing it back in)
-doesn't have a ton of sustain
-has lots of high end
-isn't necessarily capable of high gain

something that comes close to this i've found is the ibanez pd7, but i want something that sounds less ****** and shrouded, and is a cleaner sound with more clarity. my searches have told me that a ODB-3 could do all this, but what could do it better? i know this is super specific, but any suggestions any one has would be great!

there's only one way to find that sound in your head. go play some pedals. everyone will recommend their favorite pedals and you'll be no farther along than you were. there are some excellent recordings you can hear on youtube and on the internet of different pedals as well.

There's actually a very specific question located in that post, namely what sounds like an Ibanez PD7 but "sounds less ****** and shrouded, and is a cleaner sound with more clarity."

Hardly a favorite pedals-style question. And at least he isn't asking for the Hysteria tone.

Have you tried an MXR Blowtorch? It is a fuzz, but can be very, very low gain, and fits with what you are describing.

I've got no idea... I came into this thread expecting to suggest a Big Muff Clone.

I'd say your searches are right and that you should hit a music store and actually try out an ODB-3...

I'm with you up until "buzzy." Can you provide some examples of tone that you'd describe as "buzzy"?

The rest of your requirements suggest heavier overdrive, but "buzzy" suggests distortion or fuzz (to me at least), which usually start taking away the other qualities you're looking for.

okay! let's settle with heavier overdrive then. i suppose i thought "buzzy" was just an adjective closer to the sound i'm envisioning than a "woolly" or "warm" one.

What about a RAT? You can do low gain, high gain, tinty, rolled off treble, dirty, buzzy, etc.

That's the 1st pedal that comes to mind when reading this thread...

or a my DOD 250 would work as you can mod it as you wish...not being SPAMmy, in all seriousness. A DOD 250 w/ a tone pot lets you dial in how much or little treble you want or how much or little bass you want. Replacing op amp chips lets you have different flavors, and different diode combinations are a huge plus in finding the exact type of grit/buzz/dirt you want.

The first thing that popped into my head was also ODB-3, but rratajski has a point with his RAT suggestion.

Good luck!

Unrepresented, i'd love to hear your suggestions!

...and i know my criteria said no fuzz, but what about a tone factor fuzzsaw? anywhere along the lines of a blowtorch maybe?

I'm still kinda lost on the "buzzy" thing, but like rratajski said, my thoughts were also leaning towards a Rat when you discribed most of what you were looking for, although they may have too much sustain for you.

I could see the Blowtorch working, but most here would classify it as a "fuzz."

A tubescreamer or clone could work, I'd consider them boarderline "buzzy" but like the Rat, they do have a little more sustain.

And again, you may just like the ODB-3, it will satisfy a lot of your needs too.

These suggestions feel a bit scattershot though, I still think you'd get better recommendations if you could provide an audio example of what you're looking for, words can only go so far to capture what something means, and a lot can get lost in translation.

The more I think about it, I keep thinking of Mesa Boogie styled guitar overdrive. I haven't used one, but maybe a Tech 21 California pedal?
