cheap fuzz/distortion pedals?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, I started a band a few months back that I sing and play bass for, and I'd like to know of a good fuzz and distortion pedal to use both under 70$(each). I need one soon because I sound so out of place between both of the guitarist's super-distorted, grungy, really metal sound.

Fuzzy distorted bass gets lost in a mix of fuzzy distorted guitars. Cheap bass distortion pedals will go even further in losing your bass tone in the mix, as they generally don't keep alot of bottom.

If you want an affordable distortion pedal that preserves a lot of lows, the Ibanez pd-7 would be a good choice.

Ibanez Tube Screamer.

ANY pedal, will make you loose low end. Even if just a little bit.
Rickenboogie is correct, if you cannot compete with the guitar player, go cleaner , and go with a LOUDER amp!

surprised no one mention the bass big muff. i see them used for around 55 on the boards here. not my favorite muff, but the best bang for the buck fuzz for bass out there, imho.

id say go for devi ever or the ibanez PD7, no offence to the guys that recommend the TZ2 but I found it useless once you put it in a mix with drums and distorted guitar, just got drowned out

ibanez pd7 and blended via LS2 hyperion is what I use on my board at the moment...

I know this sounds almost criminal saying this, and I don't rate their gear at all usually, but for a cheap option the Behringer Bass Overdrive is actually decent for what it is and does retain a lot of bottom end, it boosts it if anything.

Sleeper pedal.
The Washburn Soloist distortion.

Sounds surprisingly good with bass, inexpensive and feels solid.

Bass Big Muff sounds great in the mix and it has several modes. Bass boost, regular and dry mix. It sounds kind of crappy all by its self but in a band setting with distorted guitars it really shines. Mine is running into a VT bass pedal which helps a lot.

For some reason a BBM before a VT pedal is magic. I used to run this all the time. The VT really responds like a tube preamp somehow.

Invest a little bit more and get a blending pedal and any of the cheap fuzzes/distortions will sound alot better by allowing a portion of the clean low end through.

Well, I've decided to go for the Electro Harmonix XO Bass Blogger Overdrive/Fuzz pedal, which is 75$(+shipping) on Musiciansfriend.com so here's the link to the pedal if anybody wants it:

Take the money you would be spending on two pedals, and find a used Pigtronix Disnortion. It has fuzz and overdrive running in parallel, which gives you some really cool textures. It doesn't loose any low end (depending on how it's set uo) and it sounds great.

Do you have any sound samples (or links to some) of that combo? I've recently thought a lot about getting a VT Bass (Deluxe) to use as a preamp...

Ah, sorry about that last post where I said I was getting an Electro-harmonix Bass Blogger.
Since then I saw some demo's on Youtube, I like the Ibanez Phat Head PD7

Try a preamp/driver instead, offers EQ and Overdrive in one unit, cheap options would be Behringer BDI21 for $30 or the Hartke Bass Attack, I use one and absolutley love it for my 'on all the time, slightly dirty clean tone', if that makes sense
