+1 to a tuner that mutes, it just makes sense. If you don't want to tune because only wimps play in tune, then make a little on/off stomp switch. Easiest project in the world if you have a drill and a soldering iron and an idea how to use them.

+1 on a tuner (should have one anyway)
+1 on a looper (nice to take noiser pedals out of your signal chain when not in use)

Would not recommend a cheap volume pedal, as it could mess significantly with your tone/signal.

cheers,

Edward

install a killswitch, it costs practically nothing

A killswitch on the bass would not prevent pops-squeals when he unplugs the bass. I think a tuner would be best.

Before I got my TU-2, I used a poor man's mute: my amp does not have a mute switch per se, but it does have a compressor with on-off. The compressor isn't very useful (minimal compression, unworkable noise), so I turn the compressor level down to zero, and the compressor on-off becomes a mute. My pedal does a better job, but I still use the compressor circuit sometimes.

I don't understand; if it's to mute, why wouldn't you use the Boss NS-2 Remote-sense expander?
