Chorus: EBS vs. Carl Martin

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello my bass brothers, sisters, and everyone in between,

I'm currently looking for a very high-quality chorus pedal. I've never been a HUGE bass effects guy, but I love chorus. I'm getting a pedal board ready for my project, since some of the material will definitely benefit from it. My primary criteria are true bypass, uncolored, doesn't introduce noise into the signal, and high quality of the actual effect.

It's come down to the EBS and Carl Martin (but if anyone has any comparable alternatives, I'm all ears for those too!). I've done a search, and there doesn't seem to be any threads directly comparing these two.

You can set two separate chorus effects with the Carl Martin. While that's nice, I'm skeptical about how much I really would use that feature. I had a friend who owned the EBS, but unfortunately, the pedal quit working on him. I imagine, knowing EBS's quality, that that was a fluke.

Would anyone suggests one pedal over the other and why? Aside from the two chorus feature of the Carl Martin, would I be gaining anything in objective quality by paying an extra c-note?

Thanks!

p.s. This will be used with five-strings. Would one track better for a low B than the other?

Hi

I own the Carl Martin bass chorus and I think it is awesome, it is quite subtle and transparent, unless you really dial up the depth, however it sounds really nice to me but I dont have a use for extreme modulation in my band. I play a DJ 5 string and the B sounds great chorused.

I do use the switching effect in one of our songs going from a slow subtle chorus to a fast deep chorus to add intensity as the track builds up. You get a nice swirly Leslie type effect.

The major downside is that it has an integrated AC power supply which is a pain in the arse if you are running off pedal powers/bricks etc. It also has a reasonably big footprint.

I havent tried the EBS however I do have the multicomp which has lasted a year without any probs.

The only other high end chorus I d suggest that I have been GASing for the Analogman Bi Chorus. Similar to the Carl Martin with 2 separate switchable channels however it runs off 9VDC and is smaller. Worth looking at too IMO

Good luck hunting

Mike

I'm packing up my one-day old Carl Martin for a return. I don't know if I got a bad unit, but it is SO noisy/rasping the second you turn the depth dial anywhere near "noon". Keep going clockwise, and it becomes a joke. If I wanted dirt with my chorus, I would have purchased a Raven. Seriously disappointed, but I couldn't find clips of the thing anywhere, and I wanted to make use of the Black Friday coupons. Oh well. On to Analog.man. (+1 to FabSavage)

FWIW, I didn't have a need for a second chorus channel in the same pedal, and didn't hear the "cool" Leslie effect when switching between the two. Also, I hate "wall wart" pedals, and didn't pay attention to the product description I guess...cause I never would have purchased a "wall wart" pedal if I had paid attention.

I've used EBS chorus for years without a thought of an alternative.
Like the pitch shifter and flange ability as well. Quality unit.

I jam with a guitarist who has an Analogman pedal, and sounds great on his guitar. He has the small footprint one, with no "deep" switch/setting, so might be a little light on bass, but it sounds fantastic and quiet on guitar.

My Carl Martin is dead silent. I do like it but for the price I wished I'd have passed.
