chris squire envelope filter

Throughout the Tormato album Chris Squire used some sort of envelope filter and other effects. I had a DOD filter and it sounded similar but you couldn't control it very well and it distorted to the point where i actually blew out a speaker. Does anyone know what he used or a similar more controllable pedal?

Chris used Moog Taurus pedals and also an Electra Outlaw MPC bass that had a filter module effect on board and a MuTron III.
Live I recall him using the Electra Outlaw MPC bass.

+10000 to what bassbrad said. I use my 3-leaf audio groove regulator to play "don't kill the whale" and I can get that "only opens when you dig in" envelope if set right...I use:

Sens: 1:00
Attack:9:00
Decay: 12:30
Intensity: 3:00

Range: hi
Feedback: on
Sweep: up

Use a pick and set you mids to be VERY present ( or buy a Rick). I use my fender jazz geddy lee with funkmaster roundwounds, hope that helps!

keep in mind that you'll have to adjust sensitivity to your bass

EDIT: what RCCollins said: adjust sens accordingly, I use a medium touch when using a pick

Oh I also emphasize the 350 range on my amp with slightly less emphasis on the 800 range. Don't HAVE to use a pick but use your fingers like iron claws!

I believe Squire was also known to use a Crybaby just set in a 'sweetspot' position as well. At least that's what I thought back then, when in '78 or so I bought my very first effects pedal. It kinda did the trick, but I was and remain decidedly not, Chris Squire. Still have my Crybaby but it is used as a doorstop these days! I use a Groove Regulator, it can cop a great variety of filter sounds. By the way, Tormato was the first Yes album I bought and it's still one of my favorites, despite general consensus.

I hope I didn't make a mistake but i just ordered the reissue of the mutron 111. I really like the vintage look but I couldn't see spending $500-$700 for an original.

Squire was in his effect heyday during that period. He was doing alot of experimenting with his Eventide Haromonizer as well.
